Phoenix Babies

That's all you Phoenix moms have?

I posted asking if anyone knew what to do with a 14 month-old in Phoenix (I'll be visiting the first week of October).  I got ONLY ONE response (thank you!) recommending the zoo.

Um, no one else has any suggestions?  I could really use your help.

Re: That's all you Phoenix moms have?

  • I am a zoo member and love it there!! I go at least 3x's a month. I really dont have any other new suggestions for a child of that age. I went to the zoo today and they had the petting zoo and toddler area closed for construction. So maybe call and see if it's going to be all done whe you are here. Oh, and in the Gilbert area Freestone Park is a great outing! It has some small rides and great play areas.
  • Thanks - I appreciate the response. I guess I'm just shocked by the lack of responses overall.  It reinforces my opinion that Phoenix is like L.A., but without anything cool in it.  Alas.

  • She's 14 months old, what do you do with her at home?  You can probably do the same things here.  The World Wildlife Zoo has an aquarium in addition to zoo animals.  There is also a railroad park in Scottsdale with trains for kids to ride, and science museum in downtown Phoenix.  There are a number of city parks all around the valley.  There is really no reason for the attitude, how are strangers suppsosed to know what you like to do with your daughter?  If SF is that superior (which it isn't btw, I was raised there), don't bother coming.
  • I didn't say SF was superior - I said Phoenix moms kind of suck for not answering the original post.  I didn't ask moms to guess what I like to do.  I asked what they would recommend, in general, for someone with a 14 month-old child to do. And, Phoenix moms suck for answering my post only when I said something snotty about your hometown.

I lived in Phoenix when I was much younger and did not have kids. That, along with your lame response, missdanib, is what reinforces my opinion that Phoenix is not my kind of town. Alas, I must visit because my family lives there.

Last, if any of you other Phoenix moms feel like flaming me, save it.  You were too lazy to respond when I asked for you help - why bother now?

  • I'm sorry--didn't see your original post. I'm sort of new to the board portion of things.

I also haven't read all the responses yet so if I'm repeating what someone else said--sorry.

The zoo can be a bit tiring for little ones. Our zoo is cool but it's won all sorts of awards for having "natural" type habitats which means the tiger might be happy a mile away from you but you won't be happy when you don't see him.

    Plus it's pretty warm.

We have two awesome children's museums. The  Phoenix Children's Museum is right downtown and has a lot of programs aimed at toddlers/infants and even newborns which is nice.

It's becoming well-known. I actually just read a nice little article about it in my Cookie magazine which is a national one so hopefully you would enjoy that.

There is also the Musuem of Youth in downtown Mesa (not sure where you're staying)

It finally starts to cool off a little bit in October but it's  still toasty--if you're a big fan of the great outdoors the Botanical Gardens are really pretty and right next to the zoo.

The firs week of October is the full-moon festival at the Japanese Friendship Garden (also in downtown Phoenix) and the kids can feed the koi and wander around in the nice evening weather, watch geisha dances and native drummers. I enjoy it but I'm big on that sort of thing.

We have a new waterpark. There's lots of mall stuff, shopping isn't always the best for kids but a few of our malls have carousels and stuff like that.

Again, I don't know how much transport you'll have while here but in Mesa there is "Amazing Jake's" Which is an indoor amusement park-haven't been so I can't comment but I do know a lot of people who enjoy it.

There's also an indoor play area with bouncy houses, building-wide jungle gyms, etc. in Mesa located in Riverview shopping center right off the 101 freeway and Dobson. I can't remember what it's called though!

Here's a site which lists a few places:

We aren't really much like LA. There's no beach obviously, it's a lot warmer here and we don't have as much culture etc. Folks like the valley for golfing, getting out of doors, hiking etc.

I've lived here my whole life and sometimes am a bit frustrated by how little there is to do with my kids but we live in a neighborhood with a park, etc. so... I hope this helped!

If you looked around a bit, you'd see that this section isn't very active and many of the ladies here are still pregnant. Most of the AZ ladies are over on the Phx nesties board. I saw this yesterday and didn't have time to respond but nevermind now! It looks like despite your rude comments you have plenty of ideas. Have a great trip.

  • Oh, shame on us Phoenix ladies for not sitting on this board to answer your questions! That MUST mean we are unfriendly and the whole town sucks!
