Multiples

thought i would ask here first

I went to my ob last night b/c of pain in my bladder (good news no UTI bad news nothing they can do about the pain b/c the rugrats are crushing it)

anyhoo my ob noted that at my last ultrasound they said that the twins were... monozygote something something.  basically he said they were identical twins (1 egg) in two sacs.  BUUUUTTTTT.... here is the kicker.  He said that was impossible b/c i am having b/g twins.  he is almost 100% posative the tech screwed up but he said just to be safe at my next ultrasound (monday) i need to ask the tech to check if the babies are this giant word he used.  Can anybody hep me out with the term?  if not i will call my ob tomorrow and get what it is.

now before you scold me normally i write everything the doc says down but since it was a last minute appointment i had forgotten my journal and wasnt expecting to get wierd news.. just thought i would have to pee in a cup.

TIA

  • It's super rare, but actually possible to have B/G ID twins.  I'm pretty sure that somehow there ends up being an extra chromosome (XXY instead of XX or XY) and when it splits you end up with one XX and one XY.
  • wow really?  is there any ill effect on the babies?  One concern that did run through our minds was some type of genetic malformation of the sex organs ya know that might lead a tech to think b/g when its not?  Im not really sure how from and ultra sound a tech can tell if they are identical if they are in seperate sacs? hmmm looks like i will be on google for a while now haha!

i am praying the tech just screwed up and they are fraternal twins b/c if i let my mind go other places i will just get upset.

  • Again, it's super, super rare.  I think I may have seen it on "In the Womb Multiples", but can't remember if that's where I saw it or not exactly.  Maybe I'll watch it later tonight, I was thinking of watching it last night anyway.

ETA:  Hopefully this link takes you there (not sure, it might pull up a random "multiples" video):  LINK HERE

  • i just googled it and there have only been something like 6 reported cases.  in most cases the girl twin has "Turner's Syndrome"  which is a genetic disorder where the the female loses the one of the sex chromosones.  i wont go into any more b/c its scary and sad.  nothing really deadly but not anything i would wish for my child!

so i am going back to praying the tech made a mistake! the article i did read said in most cases where one twin has this its usually lost due to miscarriage but considering i am sooo far along and they both seem to be very healthy im going to assume the tech messed up.  (also side note my ob said that was the second time in 1 week he saw this note sooooo he is thinking its the tech and if it is he wants to take care of that)

so unless i hear other wise on monday i will pretend everything is ok... is that immature?

  • it's impossible to know if babies are ID in utero unless the are in the same sac. If there are 2 sacs it could be either... it depends on when the egg split, etc.  the only way to know if they are IDs 100% is with DNA testing after they are born (or if they have different blood types like my boys).

there is that VERY rare extra X chromosome issue that can make a b/g ID twin set- but it's so rare, some don't even consider it a "reality".

  • just got off the phone w/ DH and he reminded me that the first 3 ultra sounds clearly showed 2 sacs and like pp said he doubts the tech could know they were identical w/ gentetic tests.  I swear between baby brain and hormones i can quickly loose reality!!! especially at the thought of something being wrong with my babies!!!!!!!

    Thanks!

  • i wouldn't panic. at the point you're at, it's REALLY REALLY REALLY hard to tell the zygosity of twins. everything's so crammed in there.  i think your doctor is talking out of his ass.
