Loic - How Would You Say It?

DH and I both love this name. It's French, but we both can easily say it in English as well.

Then I thought, "Well, maybe non-bilingual people would have difficulty with the pronounciation."

So, how would YOU pronounce Loic?

(Some background, my DH and are both French, our families are French and our ln is very French and long - rhymes and has as many syllables as Darcypaine.  We need a name that our French family can say without sounding ridiculous, that goes with our long French ln, and that is also easy for English-speakers to say.  Also, this is not a weird name in France/Quebec, it's a pretty old/traditional name.  It's not made up or you-neek or anything.)

Re: Loic - How Would You Say It?

  • Well, now that I know it is french, I'd probably say Lo-EEK. At first glance, I might have said LO-ick, rhyming w/ stoic. I like a lot of french names but I don't like this, sorry.

  • I would say Lew-eek, like Louis is pronounced in French but with a C/K sound at the end.
  • I'd say Low-Ick. Is that right?

Yup, that's it exactly.  Am wondering if it's too 'out there' for the English-speakers, though.  May have to fall back on Sebastien...

  • I honestly have no idea....I think this would be a hard name for a child growing up in America.  Just my 2 cents.

  • See, you said French, and I jumped straight to a "sophisticated" French pronunciation -- Lwahk, kind of like the Loire River except with a K sound at the end.  That's my frame of reference for the French pronunciation of words with "oi" (and no other vowels)... But I'm just a dumb American who took high school French.

  • The first one that popped into my head was Low-ick, since it's so close to Lois.  Sounds like a nice name to me, and I think would work nicely for both languages.

Well, she doesn't live in America if you look at her profile, so no worries!

I think it sounds and looks great!  I would have said Low-ick!  Canadians would get it ;)
  • Loy-k??

What about Elodie? ?I believe that's French and imo, much prettier than Loic.?

Edit: never mind, apparently you're talking about a boy name. ?I thought it was for a girl.?

  • Thanks for the input!  We don't live in the states, unless we take a posting there.  Mostly we're back and forth between Canada and Asia where our kid would be in private international schools.

It's good to get the USA perspective, though!

  • I would pronounce it Loyk, as in with one syllable. But I don't know anything French. I took Spanish.

I love the name Sebastien. What about Xavier or Phillippe? Those seem to go over pretty easily for English speakers; granted they don't pronounce it exactly the same...

  • I am a French teacher, and my dad's side of the family is French, so I love French names, but I'm not a fan of this one.

I don't like how it comes out in English (Low-Ick) and the French way of saying it isn't much better (Low-Eek).

I think there are a lot of French boy names that are much better, but that's just MHO!

We have friends who just named their boy Xavier and my cousin is Philippe.

Sebastien is the #1 contender right now for a boy, my only fear is that it's too much of a mouthful with our last name (also three syllables).
