Starting to resent daycare- I need advice! (Long)

DD started a few weeks ago at a place that just opened. Her first day was the first day they were open. Since they are brand new, I am really trying to be patient and let everyone adjust. They told us that each child would be with the same teacher for 3 years. Yesterday when I dropped DD off, they told me she was in a different room with a different teacher. She had just gotten used to her first one, and I was feeling ok with leaving her, and now we are starting over again. Today when I picked her up she was with her old teacher again. WTF? Yesterday the new lady changed her once in a 5 hour period, her pants weren't snapped all the way, her room was chaotic. There was a baby in every corner of the room screaming. Her first teacher always had them all near her so she could reach each one, and it was always fairly peaceful in there. If things don't go well tomorrow I am saying something.

Is this normal for daycares? Are there always different teachers in the rooms? I am a first-timer at this, so I don't know what the norm is, and when I should be upset and say something. Maybe I need to calm down a little, or maybe I should be more upset? I don't know! Thanks for reading if you got this far! Sorry it's so long.

  • If you don't feel comfortable, you should probably talk to the director. If I felt that the daycare was disorganized or that they weren't informing me of changes I would not be happy.

  • Mine has a morning teacher and then an afternoon teacher(s) in each room, but they are the same from day to day.  If you are talking a new teacher each day then no, that's not ok. But they may have more than 1 teacher during the day...after all, people need lunch breaks, etc.

  • I would be questioning why she's with a different teacher?  Since they told you she'd be with the same on for 3 years...they need to keep their word.  That to me doesn't sound good...."a baby in every corner of the room screaming..." Indifferent HMMM?  I don't use a daycare, so I have nothing to compare it to...but that alone would bother me.

  • how unsettling for you....i don't have any advice on what is the norm as i am a first time Mom as well but i would definately say something in concern to whoever is in charge.....you not only are leaving your most important baby in their hands but are paying a lot of money for them to take good care of your child....i would NOT hesitate to voice your concern.

    good luck.

  • DD's daycare only has 3 kids in the infant room so it isn't too hard to manage. 3 teachers rotate throughout the day. The director opens in the morning (7-9am), then the full day teacher comes in from 9-5pm, and her sister closes (5-6pm). DD doesn't get dropped off until 10 so she usually only works with 1, sometimes 2 if I have to work late. She seems to do well though. Your situation sounds difficult. I would definitely question things and see if you can request the teacher that you feel comfortable with.

  • DC has the same two teachers from 7-4 and then someone else for the last half hour or so ....(it's a 3 to 1 ratio)

I would be pissed about the diaper.  FYI - DC is changed every 2 hours.

As you mentioned the place is new so there may be an "adjustment" period.  I think some things you can let slide like screaming kids... they can only take care of so many kids at a time... Hopefully it's not from being understaffed.

  • what is their child to teacher ratio? what is your state's law?  sounds like a lot of babies with one teacher- but you might have just not said it well.... in NJ the law is 4 babies to one teacher max - and my daycare does 3to 1.

as for a child being with a teacher for 3 years- that makes me laugh... because daycare has HIGH turn over - even at the best ones- and this place is new and thinks they will not have teachers leave or be fired and are advertising that???  don't expect it to happen... but yes- you should expect your child to have the same teacher for the first WEEK! that is crazy.

i would say something- the director won't know what's going on unless someone tells her.

one diaper change in 5 hours is a HUGE red flag. If things don't improve RIGHT away i'd remove my child.

I used to work in daycare- so i know what it's like for the teachers - sometimes things happen- but what is going on here is NOT Ok.

  • If it seems wrong to you, and you feel uncomfortable then you should talk to the director.

I won't be using a daycare - my main concern with using one is that my lo would be left in a corner crying for too long so that alone would freak me out.  I didn't even send my lo to the nursery at the hospital because I saw too many babies be ignored while they were crying.
