Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If you have no set name going into delivery...

...will it come to you after the baby is born?  Or will we be those people who the hospital staff forces to put something down before we're discharged!

We have about 10 girl names we're okay on but not passionate about.  We'll take that list to the hospital and maybe magically come up with the ideal combination once the baby is born (assuming it's a girl, we're fine for boy names) but maybe we'll still be at the hospital two days later thinking, "What the heck do we name this kid?"

Re: If you have no set name going into delivery...

  • It took us a couple of days past delivery to come up with a name.  You can leave the hospital with an unnamed child.

  • It will come to you. I went to the hospital with a list when I had all 3 of my kids. None of them were decided on till after they were born! You just kinda work it out...things sound better and worse when you see the baby and say the names.

Really? I don't think you can in NY. When my brother and sil had their third they were told they could not leave the hospital without a name (otherwise it's "Jane/John Doe" - then you have to go through the process of legally changing the name)

  • with DD we went in with a list of like 15 potentials.  once she was born we ran down the list and crossed off anything that we didn't agree on for her which left 3.  then we called her by each, and picked the one she responded best to.  she was screaming from the second she was born, but stopped screaming whenever we said kayleigh.  that sealed the deal for us.
  • I'd say you're in good shape.  We didn't pick DS's name until the night before we left the hospital, we just couldn't decide.  We decided he looked most like a Simon so there it was.  I'm actually amazed at people who pick a name and stick with it the whole way through.
  • DD was an unnamed baby for a day.  She was supposed to be Audrey but we changed our mind and had to start from scratch.  We just played around with a few different names, DH came up with Brooke, and it stuck!
  • we named her as we walked out the door. they said it was just a matter of US having to file the paperwork ourselves if we didn't do it thru them.

  • I gave birth in a birth center, and I swear they said we had 2 weeks or so to file the birth certificate. We named DS 2 days after he was born. I think we chose his first name (from a list of about 10) the day he was born, but the middle name took a little longer.

  • We went in with 4 possible names and decided after seeing her.
  • I am having a baby on Thursday.  THURSDAY.  And we do not have a name yet.  We have 3 good boy options, and 3 good girl options (4 if you count the one that I like that my husband doesn't!), and we just can't decide yet.  Have I mentioned that I am having the baby on Thursday?
