I think it depends on where you are living. When I was living in NYC, I was offered anything from $18+ for 2 children. It also depends on what all you are asking of them to help you with too (i.e. more $ if you want them to help run errands, cook, clean, etc.).
My friend in ATL has a singleton but she and her friend with a boy the same age split a sitter and that person charged about $14/ hr for the two children.
My sister, who is in OH, is planning on paying her sitter $10-12 an hr, but that is only for a singleton.
So again, I think it totally depends on the area in which you live, how many children you have, and how much you expect for them to do while sitting for you.
I live in Michigan. Most of my friends with singletons pay $6. We pay $8 for our 16 month old twins. This is for an occasional babysitter...not full time.
I coach a high school volleyball team and many of them babysit. They say the average is $8 to $10 an hour for families with more than one child.
We're also in MI. We're in the process of hiring a "mother's helper" to assist with things while I'm at home. We're paying $8/hour for that. There will be 4 kids total here, but she'll only be responsible for whatever I don't have enough hands to do : )
