I am in the process of filing out FMLA paperwork for my dr appts. My direct supervisor is being a real pain about me taking time off to run to dr appts. I am going to have to start clocking my FMLA time for this. He is being so difficult that I question what my life will be life when I come back after the baby. I had all intentions of returning to work until I felt this negative behavior about my pregnancy. I will be taking short term disb. What if I decide afterwards that it is not worth going back? Am I responsible for paying that std back? Has this happened to you? Was your manager difficult to deal with?
This problem is really starting to bother me. I still have a long way to go before the birth, but I want to start planning. Thanks!
Re: Maternity Leave Questions
What he has you on is intermittent leave. I don't feel he is probably trying to be difficult but probably more so going by the bylaws of your company. If you worked for me you would be doing the same thing, How ever many hours you take off for Dr.s appts and such is being added together and can be deducted off your total time allotted on leave. So if you take a total of 48 hours off for drs appts, he can, by law ask you to return to work 48hours earlier than what ever allotment of time you get from your company. Does this make sense?
Here is a link about this type of leave, and yes pregnancy does constitute a medical necessity.

If you are being paid for your leave by your company and you choose not to return back to your job, you may be required to pay it back, Also some companys have a time limit, meaning they will pay for your leave but you have to return to work for 6months after and then you wont have to pay for it. I would check with your company hand book.
You need to have a sit down with your HR person and go through all the senerio's.
You would not be obligated to pay back the STD. The STD is a benefit that you pay into. If they have some other sort of paid leave, they could require a pay back, but not for STD.
Not sure where you work or your hours but I always tried to make my Dr appts for as late as I could so that I didn't have to take much work time off. So I would make my appts for 4pm so I could work the majority of the day.
Had I not done that then I would have had to use sick time and FMLA for the time off.

My thoughts exactly. If you're paying for STD insurance, you've already paid your dues.
My manager was a complete *** by the way. I even had to go so far as to file paperwork for accommodation of temporary disability so she couldn't get on me about moving my schedule for appts or make me carry heavy boxes during our office move.
BTW, if you're using your sick time bank for appointments, they can't count that as FMLA time, so he can't deduct that from your leave at the other end.
Start keeping track IN WRITING of all of the retaliatory stuff your manager starts doing. Send it to HR. Maybe HR can "remind" him that he can't discriminate against you for being pregnant.
I don't understand that anyway - WTF is his problem that he is pissed that you're pregnant?
