Re: monitors

  • I have two. One I inherited from my sister which is just a plain old monitor and one fancier one with motion sensors that we got from family.  At the moment I'm using both as we have only 1 level in our house and it's not uncommon for you to be at one end of the house and not hear her in the family room or in the bedroom.  I am not currently using the motion sensor as she is sleeping in the bassinet next to the bed but once she moves to the crib we may use it.  It was recommended to me by a coworker.  That one is digital and certainly is a bit more complicated.  But there is something to be said for the ease of the simple monitor as well.  It was up and running in no time and is actually louder than the digital monitor I have.

Here's the link to the one with the motion sensor I have:

  • We love our video monitor; it's this one. I highly recommend it. It's great for when Warner makes random noises in his sleep or as he's falling asleep. We can just look in the monitor and make sure he's okay, rather than going in his room and possibly waking him up.

But as much as we love it, it's NOT a necessity. A lot of people I know get by just fine with a non-video monitor.

  • We didn't have the video one but had Angel Monitor. The best thing ever esp. for those worried about SIDS.

  • my best friend has that same monitor but she lives overseas at the moment...does it interfer at all with cordless phones, wireless etc?  I have heard digital is better for that but can't find a highly reviewed digital monitor...

    thanks:-)

we have this one also. been using it for 2 years and never had any problems. We even take it outside and sill get a pretty decent picture. The only "wierd" issue is our neighbor has the same monitor so once or twice when we were outside with the monitor we picked up their signal instead of ours. Never happened indoors though.

  • We have a this Graco sound monitor. It's worked great for us and I like that it has two receivers so that we can keep them in different rooms. We live in a relatively small split level so we are usually within hearing distance of the baby based on the layout of our house.

I must say that I do think the video monitor would come in handy if you spend most of your time on a completely different floor from the baby's room.

  • We also have the Summer handheld video monitor - not a necessity but really nice to have.  We haven't had any interference, but the battery sucks.  I have to keep it plugged in.  I need to call about getting a new battery.

  • We don't have a video one (not for any particular reason, I think we just didn't really know about them) but we have two of these, one for each girl.  I like that there are different channels, so with one for each girl, the signals don't get crossed.

We also have a more cheap one that we bring with us when we travel or go to peoples' houses.  I like having it extra, so we can just grab it and go.

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • We just have sound ones and they do the job just fine.  There were a few times I wanted a video but I couldn't justify the cost of buying it.  If I could do it over again i would put one on our registry and hope that someone would buy it for us.  I could have used it when they started rolling over - are they crying because they rolled over and can't roll back or because they are hungry? and again when Maggie was older and started getting her arms and legs stuck in the crib bars.
  • No video, just sound - it works fine for us.  I will say if I was a SAHM I might prefer the video, but as a mommy in the workforce it just was not worth the cost.
