Breastfeeding

how do you know if you have thrush?

i heard you look in LO's mouth to see if they have white patches, but can the mom get thrush too?  how can you tell?

Re: how do you know if you have thrush?

  • For me it was little dry, crusty bumps around my nipple. GL if you do have thrush. IT SUCKS! We are dealing with it right now. Just make sure your Dr. treats BOTH of you right away.

ditto on the making sure the dr treats both of you! (nystatin drops for baby and nystatin cream for you!) i had awful burning/stinging nipples as my main symptom....so painful!! the baby never got any white patches, thank goodness! also, thrush can cause diaper rash in baby so make sure to use some a&d ointment with each diaper change. my little guy also had some increased fussiness and gassiness with it (doctor said that was normal)

  • DD never showed symptoms, but my nips were on FIRE!

Skip the nystatin(sp?) and get some Genian Violet @ Walgreens. Looks like hell, but works in 3-4 days vs. 2+ weeks of the other stuff.

  • My nipples hurt when DS fed and they were red, dry and cracked.  I put some fungal cream on them between feedings and it cleared up within a few days. I also stopped wearing breast pads all day.  I wear them only at night now.
