This may be a stupid question

I am allergic to latex, and I just noticed that the nipples that go with the bottles i want are made of latex.  Is there any way that this could affect my milk, if i pump and then give the bottle?

Re: This may be a stupid question

  • That doesn't seem like a stupid question to me. I have no idea, but I would ask your OB or Ped.

  • Um, I'd imagine it would affect you if you touch it and would affect LO if they are allergic, too.

  • But I'd also ask your pedi about this...

  • I would ask for sure what the odds of LO having a latex allergy as well are. That seems like the more likely problem for interactions.

This. I had a friend who was allergic to latex and her son was as well. Unfortunately, she found out the hard way when his throat closed up when she was feeding him because of the nipple.

Could you use the bottles you want but go buy silicone nipples for them? That would be my suggestion.

  • I would go with a silicone nipple instead.  Latex allergies are pretty common which is why most hospitals ban latex.
  • Great question... not stupid at all. I would be interested to know what your doc says about this, let us know!
