Head not real steady at 4 months

My 4 month old is not real steady with his head.  He can hold it up, but is very wobbly when he looks around.  Should I worry?  He goes to the doctor tomorrow so I will have it checked out.  I have had a few people comment on this.  I also found out that he is sleeping in his bed most of the day at daycare.  He is an easy baby, so I think they put him in bed because they don't have to do much to entertain him because he hardly fusses.  I have told them not to let him sleep all day and that I want him up playing more.  Thanks.

  • I wouldn't worry but I'd talk to the pedi about it just to double check. If he's not getting tummy time and staying on his back all the time, he's not having the opportunity to build those neck muscles!

My LO doesn't like laying on her tummy for more than 5 minutes, but we do a lot of work when we're holding her--we make her "fly" like superman, we put her on our chest, etc. to help work that neck.

  • The pedi may give you some ideas on how to work with him to get more head control.  Do you do tummy time at home?

Maybe ask the daycare to work on some tummy time with him while he's there, too.

  • By 4 months I would say a baby's head should be steady so I think you are rightfully concerned. DS's head was pretty steady around 2.5 months because we work with him a lot on it. Luckily I'm a WAHM so I can be very hands on with him. Maybe you need to look into other day care options if they aren't spending enough time with your son.

  • Every baby is different and meets their milestones at different times, but I would bring it up with your pedi because I do think by 4 months most babies are having reasonable head control..and definetly talk to your daycare, they should be giving him tummy time daily as well as interacting with him in other ways, singing, holding, reading, etc..just keeping a baby ( even a mellow one like yours ) in a crib all day is not healthy for their development..it's just laziness on their parts !
  • i would be so pissed to find out my baby was being left in a crib all day. new sights and experiances are soo important for cognitive development. that could very well be why he has a little trouble with head controle. I am sure he is fine and will be a master at head controle in no time :)

i would make sure that wasnt happning any more or find a new daycare.

  • Thanks for your input.  I was furious when I found out that he is in bed pretty much all day.  I have some spies to make sure that doesn't happen anymore and if it does, I'm going to the director and looking for another place.  I hope that's why he's not steady.  He seems to be doing everything else a 4 month old should.  I wish I could stay home with him.
