Solids question on veggies

So DS is 6 months old and has been eating veggies since 5 months.  I started with cereal, but he wasn't a fan so I stopped and started on veggies.  I plan to reintroduce cereal this month with fruit mixed in as a second meal for him (probably breakfast).

Anyway when you had LO on veggie purees(around 6ish months), did you mix it with anything else (like cereal?) or did you just give your LO just the veggies by itself?

I went to my mom's today for dinner and my sister was there.  My mom was feeding Nicholas some greenbeans.   My sister says "You just give him plain green beans?"  I said "yes why what else would I give him?"   She says "I don't know, but I don't think I gave my kids just veggies by themselves".

DS is 6 months old, I don't think he's ready for those other jars of food yet (like some sore of pureed meats with veggies mixed together).  Isn't he too young for those?

Re: Solids question on veggies

  • I only did rice cereal alone for about a week so the babies could get used to eating from a spoon.  After that I put it in their purees.  I do think he's probably too young to start mixing too much.

www.wholesomebabyfood.com has a list of what age it's okay to eat everything and I'm pretty sure it's too early for meats.  Keep it simple and you're doing just fine!

Thanks!  I never would have questioned myself if my sister hadn't said anything.  I figure I was fine too.  I'm going to check out the link you just posted.

  • I gave just a veggie to Katen all the time! I didn't see the value in cereal. (occasinally fed oatmeal but that's about it)  As long as the baby has tried both veggies without any allergies, you can mix veggies anytime you like for a different taste. (or a veggie and a fruit/ veggie and a meat) It's not a requirement though and is simply done to provide variety.

What kind of meat?  Like the one's in the jar (if I don't make my own food).  I've seen the chicken listed at 2nd foods.  Is that what you mean?  how old was Katen when you started her on adding the meats?

  • Pretty much whatever you find. I haven't paid much attention to jarred food but assume you can maybe get just plain pureed chicken/turkey/beef. (if not you could pop a 2nd foods type into the blender for a second or two.) I'm trying to think... I believe I started K on meat right around 7mos after we'd tried out several veggies. Some pedis say to wait but wholesomebabyfood suggests it as a first food. Katen did have sensitivities to certain foods (usually fruits) but never had an issue with meats. The only drawback is that they smell and look SO gross. lol!

  • DD was on meats at 4 1/2 months, no issues.  She enjoyed veggie mixes a lot.  Like veggies and meat, veggies with other veggies.

We just used stage 2 meats.

  • Oh, forgot to add, cereal is important if you are trying to add iron.  Otherwise it is only valuable if baby enjoys it, or if you want to thicken any foods.
