wierdest advice ever....I guess crochet hooks have many uses

A friend told me that when she had her first kid she just took a crochet hook and broke her own water. She was telling me this in case our OB wouldn't let me induce on my due date. i quickly informed her we have our induction scheduled for the 22nd, if I haven't gone by then.

EDIT:

TRUST me that I did tell her how stupid she was, we weren't friends before, I met her at a neighborhood mommy-meet-and-greet. I must say it totally freaked me out that she would A)do that and B) TELL ANYONE!  That is something you keep a secret.

  • Indifferent....you should have informed her that she is nuts for using a crochet needle to break her water.

Nope, she told me to buy a new one, can't remember what size, and to boil it. She is pregnant again in january and said that is what she'll be doing if baby doesn't come on her own.

Wow! ?I don't even know what my reaction would be, lol! ?

  • ...I can't even fathom how she thought to do that or why she thinks its okay to do.
  • Holy Crap!  The thing the doc uses to break the bag of waters does look like a crochet hook but i never imagined someone would be dumb enough to use one on themselves.

  • Thats soo funny... in a scary kinda way! I always what those baby story shows and when ever they break the water I always thought how the instrument that they used look just like a crochet hook!?

she said she saw them use a "crochet hook" to break a womans water on TV. I did inform her though that they are DOCTORS and those hooks are STERILE!

  • Good way to hurt baby.

I thought it looked like a giant chopstick. I was in the room when the Dr broke my Aunt's water.. ?

    ?

ETA: but then again, I wasn't looking closely.. I was only 19 and kinda freaked out, LOL?

Or poke a hole in your kid's brain. Wow. Some people just can't wait and let these babies come out on their own, can they?

  • She needs to have her head checked!
  • I hope your friend doesn't accidentally:

    a) Introduce an infection

    b) Cause an umbilical prolapse

There is a reason that you need to be in a hospital or at least in the company of a professional to have your water broken artificially. If the baby is still floating there is a much higher chance that the umbilical cord could prolapse. This is an extremely time sensitive, life threatening, emergency.

  • Okay I'm sorry but some people are just stupid.  That is probably the dumbest advice I've ever heard of, and I've heard some dumb stuff.  I seriously hope no one listens to your friend.  I bet her doctor would have a fit if he/she knew what your friend was doing.  That is just wrong on so many levels!
  • So what is she going to do if it causes the cord to come out first? HUGE risk to baby :(  When they break it in the hospital and there is cord prolapse they have minutes to get a cs done and race aginst the clock.  If it doesn't break on its own, there is a reason.  That's one reason many Drs try to avoid breaking your water.  Her poor kids!
  • oh geez, that is so unsanitary and very dangerous.  On a side note, the device they use to break your water, does indeed look like a crotchet hook.

  • Your friend should be ashamed of herself. How selfish to put her LO at risk. If she were my friend I would have tore her a$$ up as I lost all respect for her.
  • That is the scariest thing I've ever heard. Why would anyone do that? If that was my friend, I probably would have smacked her head (like that V8 commercial) and asked her what the f*** was wrong with her.

  • I hope you gave her a Bittch Please.
  • hey, I'm not surprised this post is coming from you, Abby. Tell "your friend" to let the baby come when the baby is ready.

is your friend also gonna circumcise her own child with a cigar cutter? Some people should not procreate.

Your friend is a f*cking idiot and she shouldn't be diluting the gene pool by reproducing.

And hey, if her cord prolapses from this little stroke of genius, will be she using a pizza cutter to give herself a C-section?

  • If that actually happened, I would call her OB and rat her out before she injures her baby.
  • I would call CPS.  If she believes it is okay to do something that stupid, I would be concerned with the well being of those children.
