My mom tells me she went in "two weeks overdue" (they didn't use ultrasounds at that point) with me, they tried to induce her using drugs, it didn't work, she went home. Two weeks later she had me at "four weeks late." From the Googling and birth stories I've read, it looks like a failed induction means a c-section nowadays, especially since I'm already so far overdue. I emailed my doctor to ask but haven't received a response yet.
I don't necessarily want a c-section, but anything sounds better than going home without a baby.
Also, when you were going in for your induction, did you have to wait longer than you originally thought because they were full? I'm going in on Sunday evening at six assuming they aren't full, and obviously I won't know until right before if they'll have space. I just wondered how it went for other people.
Thanks!
Re: If your induction failed, did you have a c-section?
I was pushed back about 6 hours on my induction. I was in labor for 24 hours and stalled at 5 cm. DS kept fluctuating between -3 and -1 station.
I ended up having a c-section, but it turns out that I would have had one anyway. My pelvic bones were just too close together and that's why DS couldn't drop.
Well, yes at 41weeks a failed induction would mean a c-section. Why are you so worried about a failed induction? You're way past due and I think you're more likely to have a successful induction at this point.
I was induced 2 days before my due date b/c of high bp. 27hrs of labor and I had to have an emergency c-section at the last hour b/c I was stuck at 9cm and my water had been broken for 24 hours.
Not gonna lie, it sucked.
And, no, we didn't have to wait b/c it was full.
This. I could have waited until I went into labor naturally and I still would have had to have a c-section.
Whats up with all of us girls with the defunct pelvises?
I'm concerned because I haven't had a contraction, at all. While hooked up to the NST machine, the nurse was saying she couldn't believe I wasn't having even a tiny contraction I wasn't feeling, etc, going on about it and making me feel a little like a freak. I think MIL helps with that by saying "You haven't had a contraction yet? Still? Really?"
And because I'm not dilated at all, still. I asked my OB to try to strip my membranes three times and each time she's said I'm too high and closed.
I'm hoping those things won't matter once the drugs kick in.
I don't know what you'd consider a failed induction - if it failed, the baby comes out somehow, so I guess that's a c-section!
In my case, I was induced 2wks early due to PIH and Pre-E. I was only 1.5cm and barely 50% effaced and she was way high up.
I DID get a call that morning from another OB in my office telling me not to come in at 6am, but wait a bit because everyone and their sister was delivering. My OB called me at 9am and said she'd been on since 7am and had 2 deliveries. They were discharging some patients (that usually happens between 11am-1pm), so they wanted me there at noon-ish.
H wasn't welcome at the hospital (long story....I didn't want him there). I got in my car and drove myself there and met my doula. As I sat there and realized I was nowhere near ripe for this induction, I resigned myself to a c-section. I was cool with it. I didn't care.
It was a hard 20hrs of walking, squatting, twisting myself to open my pelvis. I effaced with the Cytotec and dilated with the Pitocin, but the kid wouldn't come down! I figured that was it - c-section. Sign me up. I had been beaten with Pitocin. I had walked all damn night. I was tired and the pain was starting to get to me in a bad way.
They checked me and, finally, she was down low enough that they could safely break my water. 2.5hrs later, it was all over.
Not exactly easy, but not a "failure". I wonder how many doctors would have cut me open since it took so long. I was asking WTH? Shouldn't this be moving faster?? They just said, nope....it's all going along fine, relax, walk, chill out. Since my BP was stable and her vitals were looking good, they saw no need to rush things.
Considering my 2nd was only 4.5hrs, I started to get pissed around the 6hr mark, but it all worked out.
This was my exact birth story...I had no contractions, no dilation, nothing and went in at 41w1d. NST was awesome, but on u/s my baby only measured 6 lbs and my fluids were too low for me to go another week, so it was time for him to arrive.
Went to the hospital that night, Cervadil did NOTHING. Started Pit at 8am, my body did great on it...the gradual increase worked so that I never went from no contrax to awful ones. I had dilated to 1cm at 11, enough to break water. Continued to have gradually increasing contrax until 5PM. At that point they were measuring at around 90 on the monitor, and I still had no progress. The doc gave me the option to continue but we all knew my chances were not goog, so we did a c-section.
Two pieces of advice: first, even though the doctors say it's "required" to monitor you around the clock, fight to have a few minutes off the monitor each hour, and use it to get into different positions. My baby had turned face up (we didn't know) and could not move into the birth canal. If I had been able to get out of bed (I did not get an epi) I might have been able to coerce him into turning.
Second thing is, don't be too scared of the c-s. I wanted a natural, med-free birth, and ended up with a high intervention birth and a spinal, and in the end we are both perfectly healthy and happy. So, even if it comes to that, stay calm and relaxed...the worst thing you can do is make it seem worse than it really is.
Good Luck! You'll be a mom soon!
I went a full 43 weeks before finally giving in to an induction. I never had any contractions leading up to that point. We tried to induce for three days before getting anywhere. I fully dilated and pushed for hours to no avail. I ended up having a c-section due to CPD (baby was 9 lbs, 6 oz).
That was just my experience though. Not much about my pregnancy was typical!
I didn't have to wait for the induction, our midwife met us there.
i went in for pre-e (all along i had PIH)- i did great on the cervadil and progressed to 3 cm on it w/o pitocin- they set me up with an epi around 3pm and then gave me the pitocin about an hour later- after 5 cm and them breaking my water, i slowed down to 1cm every 3 hr which apparently is really really slow (sup to be 1 cm an hour)- i made it up to 9cm and fully effaced when the docs disagreed on how far i was dialated- one said 9 then the other said 7- the final concensus was that my cervix was swelling and the baby was not deceding into birth canal easily- i felt constant pressure and was not feeling well- it was 3pm the next day
after pitocin and after crazy epi shakes, hot flashes, cold sweats, throwing up every 5-10 minutes, i finally threw in the towel (i had been in hospital since friday and it was now sunday with no baby)- i cried all the way to the operating room and while on the operating table.
but i ended up with a beautiful baby girl and looking back on it, i wouldn't have it any other way and i think i made the right choice to go ahead with the c-section- just trust your gut with it!
i was the same. yes, tried an induction but as PPs have said, i also had a narrow pubic arch and LOs head got stuck.
I too was closed like fort knox and very posterior. I went all the way to 42 weeks and then was induced by my MW. I laboured for 9 hours before they realized something was wrong. He was trying to come through my cervix with the side of his head. It was putting a lot of negative pressure on my cervix and it caused it to swell shut and start to move posterior again.
They stopped the oxytocin and my contractions completely stopped. Then his heart rate dropped and so did mine. They could only find his heart beat if I was on oxygen so they did an emergency c/s.
My body never did go into labour at all, it was all the oxytocin.
