Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

1 year old language/speech skills

My mother made the comment tonight of "why isn't she saying words yet?  she really needs to be saying words by this age."  Now she has me freaking out.

DD doesn't say words.  She's said "Daddy" once, but uses "mama", "dada" and "baba" most frequently.  She babbles a lot.  She will answer questions with a point to the referent object or a look.  She follows commands.  She is very social.  She doesn't doesn't say any clear words.  Does this sound like a typical 1 year old speech/language skills wise?  I'm starting to doubt my own parenting skills based on my mother!

Re: 1 year old language/speech skills

  • My DS only started saying his first real word this week!  It's "hi" of all things!  Our pedi said for me us to check back in with him in Oct. if he still wasn't saying any words.

  • DD only really says "da-da" , "na-na" and "hi". She is also very social... from what I've seen they are right on track.
  • ty is 19 months and he only says mama, dada, caca--for dog (it is pretty funny) and just started saying 'oh no' but he understands a heck of a lot more. he's been 'talking' more directly to us, but I feel he is really behind.
  • DS says mom, dad, mama, dada, and uh-oh. He also talks in his own language and seems to carry conversations with himself.
  • At 12 months Luke was saying like 3 words.  Your son is fine.  Luke has gradually gained more of a vocabulary (although some of it is deciphered, and most of it is not consistent), but he still mostly talks in babbles.  But the babbles actually sound like many different consonants put together, so he is working on it.
  • mine was doing exactly what yours is doing up until just last week. We finally got a "hi"! My pedi wasn't at all concerned and only would have been slightly concerned at her 15m. appt.

  •  I think your mom has Grandmaitis.  That is forgetting what her own children were like and projecting unreasonable expectations onto her grandchildren.  My mom has this, too.

    You DD is totally normal.

  • At M's one year appt, the doctor said that "mama," "dada" and, maybe, one or two other words was developmentally on-track for the age.  Your mom needs to chill.
  • I'm a speech therapist and I wouldn't worry about her language unless she doesn't have any meaningful words at 15 months. As long as she's following simple commands and participating in social games/activities, then she should be fine. There's a span of several months that children may begin to use meaningful words.?
  • My son says various words like, dada, mama, bottle, up, down, ball, more, hot, water, dog, hi, bye and "pa" for grandpa. He has a few more in his vocabulary but I didn't count them because they aren't very clear yet, but we know what he's referring to.
