Can u go from 3 to 0?

Can you backtrack in your dilation???

Re: Can u go from 3 to 0?

  • According the the instructor at my classes - NO.

She said different docs measure differently so there may be some differences there.

  • No, but if you've had different OBs or midwives check then there could be a slight difference. I had one tell me 1 and one tell me 2. Although 0-3 would be a BIG difference.

  • My SIL did, which sounds odd. But it did happen. Unless the first ones to check didn't know what they were doing.
  • Yes, you can un-dilate, although going back to absolute 0 is pretty extreme.

I am in high risk ob because last night I was contracting ever 1-2 minutes. I have been on magnesium (blech) for aboout 36 hours now along with some oral meds to stop contractions long enough for the sterroids to kick in. 2 doctors said I was 2-3 cm dilated and thinning and then the latesst nurse came in when I was feeling a ton of pressure to check me and said you are closed so we are stopping the mag and sending you to the womens wing for mild monitoring. We had a consultation with the neonatologist and either way he will more likely than not be fine but really? Just "get the hell out you're fine" from a nurse???

  • I asked my OB this week because I was 3cm on Monday in L&D, and she technically you can't go backwards, but a change in pressure on the cervix could change how open the cervix is.

  • You can reverse dilate. It can be caused by stress and a few other factors. Ina May writes about it in her book.
  • According to my MD and my mother (who has been a L&D nurse practitioner for 30 years), you can NOT go backwards in your dilation - as in, it is impossible. People may measure differently, as it is subjective, but no, your cervix will not close after being dilated.?
  • Different Docs measuere differently. When I was in the hospital with DS, one Doc came in and checked me and said I was at 7 and called my regular Doc, who came by a little later, checked me and discovered I was only 4. It was like 5 in the morning and they woke us all up to tell us it was almost time-we were all mighty pissed at the error. How are you off by 4 cm or more?
