Don't shoot me, but are you going to get the H1N1 for yourself and/or your DC?

And why or why not? I am having the hardest time deciding...?

  • If it's available - we will all get it. We are around elderly grandparents all the time and are protecting them as well as ourselves.

  • Not sure yet.  Probably not, because I am not comfortable with the newness of it.  I don't really want to use myself or my kids as guinea pigs. This is definitely a tough one, though.  I am generally 100% in favor vaccinations.  We will get the regular seasonal flu vaccination, for sure, though.

  • We more than likely will.
  • Not. I don't do flu shots at all. Its against my something.

also aside from my host of reasons for doing whatever it is I do, I don't like the rush job they have to put on it....look at that great new HPV vax...scary!

  • Likely not.

  • not.  We'll do the reg. flu shot for sure.
  • Definitely not for DD1. I will be a SAHM so none of us will be really exposed to a lot of people. If anybody gets it, it'll be DH since he's around people all the time for work but I'm having a hard enough time convincing him to get a regular flu shot.
  • Ugh, I seriously debate this one with myself everyday.

I've gotten the season shot already and because last year I had a severe case of pneumonia (ambulance ride and all), I got the pnuemonia shot yesterday.

My dd will get the seasonal shot as soon as her dr. has them.

My allergist and dd's pedi have not recommneded the H1 shot but my primary dr. has recommended it.  The allergist said it is too new and not tested enough.  Dd's in preschool and I teach elementary school.  I also have some students with compromised immune systems so this worries me.

What to do, what to do...... and the debate goes on.

  • I asked our pedi about it today... she said that she's undecided whether to give it to her own son, she's not making recommendations at this time.  awaiting more info from the cdc.  I work in icu and we had a couple of people with it over the summer... not too worried about it at this time.  just wash your hands good, teach your child to cough into his/her sleeve... wash wash wash.

we're still undecided, leaning toward no, not this year...

  • No, we are not getting the swine flu vax and that's saying a lot since MH is an ER physician and is seeing/treating a lot of swine flu.  The reason why?  Guillian-Barre Syndrome.  If you google "Swine Flu of 1976" you can read all about the deaths/paralysis associated with the rushed swine flu vax in '76.  While the cases of GBS associated with the flu vax is decreasing....it's still a possibility nonetheless.  No one that DH has diagnosed/treated with swine flu has been any more sick than say with the regular old flu.  Not one case of his has even been admitted to the hospital.  We can deal just fine without the vax.  It's just a personal choice for us.

  • If anyone gets it, it'll be H.  I don't leave the house.  The kids don't either.  Especially with winter coming.  He's the only one who goes anywhere.

I've had 2 family members get GBS....I'd rather have the flu then go through that.

Same here...with my brother. There are a few vaccines I'm VERY against for that reason.

See this is what makes me lean toward no.  The school nurse and most of the dr.'s, nurses I know are NOT getting it and they are at high risk of exposure.  If they are in the field and are opposed, they may know more than what I do, kwim?

  • I would like to but like pp said I don't want us to be guinea pigs.  If we do get it, it won't be in the first round.

Honestly, it is already all over the place where I live.  I work in an elementary school, DH works with high school kids, and DD is in daycare.  I think it will be a miracle if we don't get it before the vaccines are even available.  There have been several cases at my school and one is DD's room at daycare.

  • Yes we plan to under the advice of my DH who is also an MD.
