Almost 8 month old not sitting up on her own?

DD sits just fine, if we put her there.  But if she is on her back or belly, she will not sit up on her own.  She'll whine until one of us sits her up.  She has been crawling for almost two months, and rolled over early as well.  My mom thinks it's weird that she won't sit up on her own, and now I'm starting to worry.  Has anyone else experienced an early roller/crawler but late sitter-upper?

Re: Almost 8 month old not sitting up on her own?

  • DD is almost 11 months old and still cannot go from a lying/belly position to a sitting position. I don't think it's anything to worry about. She'll figure it out in her own time.

  • DD would roll over, push up to hands and knees, and then sit back.  Does your DD do that?  I think you're fine either way.
  • I wouldn't let your mom get you worried. My MIL always had me worried at some milestone like when DD didn't "find" her hands or when she didn't roll over, or when she didn't hold a spoon or drink from a sippy cup. Eventually she learned how to do all those things. She just does it at her own pace.

  • Hi!  While I am on this board because I am expecting, I am also an early intervention physical therapist.  If this is the only gross motor problem that your LO is having, I would not worry at all.  Typical sitting is 6-8 months and getting in and out of position comes a couple of months afterwards.  Just wait it out and it should be here soon!

  • DS didn't learn how to get into a sitting position until he crawled.  However, he learned how to crawl differently than most kids--he started from a sitting position and leaned forward until he was on all fours.  So, he had lots of practice leaning forward and pushing himself back up.

Can you try showing her how to do it by walking her backwards from a crawling position?

  • Allison learned how to do that around 9/10 months when she learned to crawl.  I wouldn't worry for a while longer :)
  • I'd take this as a sign not to listen to your MIL ;)
