Question for multiple mommies

Did your ob suspect a multiple pregnancy by your betas before an ultrasound was done?

  • No -- you can't tell it's multiples based on a beta.

  • I was asking because my ob mentioned it to me since my numbers were high. She actually sent me for a 3rd beta since my appt isn't for 2 more weeks

  • My RE nurse did, but I did ovulate 4 eggs so it was not a stretch.

  • But betas won't prove anything.  Some twins/triplets start off with a super low "I think I might lose the baby" beta.  Some singletons start off with a super high "holy crap I might be carrying quads" beta.

Your OB can certainly "think" there is more than one and get another beta but it won't prove anything.  I think the overlap of betas is shown at betabase.com (if that site is still working).

Good luck on whatever you're wishing for and I hope you get at least one healthy sticky baby!

  • Technically, betas don't prove anything, but my RE nurse did mention that there may be 2 in there when she saw my betas and she was right.

  • No and we only saw one sack at our 5 week ultrasound. Then at 6 weeks two babies with two heartbeats.?

  • I never had betas drawn that I am aware of, so no.  We found out at our first u/s which was 11 weeks, spontaneous identical twins.
  • no, they didn't. I asked and they said they can't tell by the beta.

  • We did ivf and transferred two eggs back so we knew it was a possibility.  But the re and the nurses did not say if they thought it was multiples or not.  At my 5w u/s they say the two sacs.

  • I also did IVF and we knew it was a possibility as we had 2 very good 5-day blasts transferred.

My RN told me my betas were pretty high for the first test (292 at 14dpo) so twins were a distinct possibility, but she had seen singleton pregnancies with betas that high at that point.  So as the PPs said, there's no way to definitively predict it until the u/s.
