XP: Toddler Haircuts

Just got home from my DS's haircut and am now left wondering...she used a powder of some sort to get the hair off of his neck (it was really sticking to his skin)...is that a huge no no since I always read your not supposed to use powders on babies in case they inhale it?   TIA  (kind of a dumb question but just looking to ease my curiousity)

Re: XP: Toddler Haircuts

  • I thought that was only a concern if the powder contained talc.  There are a number of talc-free powders available at most major stores.

  • I read that too but not sure if a barber shop would have that.  It was a green bottle...
  • Even if it did contain talc, one brief use after a haircut won't hurt your child.  The danger of talc inhalation would be that a child would breathe it over many days and have lung problems.

I mean, think of all the children who were exposed to talc baby powders for all those years.  Just a tiny number of them ever experienced problems related to breathing talc!

Don't sweat it this time, but if you're not comfortable with it, just let the haircut person know next time that you don't want powder.

  • A once shot exposure of powder (talc or not) is not harmful.  The respiratory issues arise when they are constantly exposed to a particulate (like if you used it with EVERY diaper change)  If you are concerned for future haircuts, either bring your own baby powder, or ask them more specifics about what they use.
