D.C. Area Babies

Today is my due date

I am 40 weeks pregnant today.  I went to the doctor on monday and she told me I was 2 cm dilated and 25% effaced, she said the baby could come within the week.  I have been having mild period like cramps, but so far not the real thing yet...how much longer do I need to wait?  Is there anything I can do to help?  I feel the baby moving a lot almost like she wants to get out but does not know how.  Did anyone go past their due date while expecting the first baby?

Thanks!

Re: Today is my due date

  • Oh, I feel for you. I remember seeing my due date come and go with no progress at all.

I ended up being induced 5 days after my due date. But I hadn't dilated at all..I was still less than a centimeter the morning I was induced. Lots of people will recommend going for walks, eating spicy food, sex, etc. But honestly, I really don't think any of that stuff works. Your baby is going to come whenever he/she is ready (or if you get induced, when you and your doctor decide). I know you are probably very uncomfortable, especially if that little one is squirming around a lot, but try to enjoy these last several days. Go get a pedicure, go out to a nice dinner with your DH, just try to relax and enjoy your free time.

  • hang in there, i was so sad watching my due date pass!

i went to the doc when i was exactly 40 weeks and had no progress and was not contracting. i went into labor the following evening, and baby was born at 40 wks 2 days.

like PP said, try and enjoy your time!

  • I went a week past due date and finally got induced. Even though it was so hard waiting that week and being so over-paranoid about every twinge I felt, DD came out so fully cooked that I think she was an easier newborn because of it! You don't have much longer now to wait, so enjoy yourself the best you can!!

  • I know you are anxious for the little one to come, but enjoy this time.  Your life will be radically and forever changed when the little one arrives.  Have a candlelit dinner with your husband.  Go see a movie.  Cuddle together on the couch while reading a good book.  Prioritize you.  And enjoy.  While many miracles are about to happen, take this opportunity to celebrate the one that already has: you and your DH.
  • A lot of moms go past their due date. It's even more common with first babies. And the due date is just an estimate. Most doctors will let you go to either 41 or 42 weeks (depending on the dr) and then induce, Both of my girls were born at 40w2d. Some things you can do: walk, walk, walk, spicy food, sex, squats. Good luck! And, like pp said, enjoy this time with your DH!

  • Thank you ladies!  I feel better now, I will enjoy this time with my husband...I will keep you posted when the baby is born.
  • Almost every single friend of mine who has given birth has done so late.  I was 8 days late (and even then needed pitocin to speed up my horrible two days long labor).  Enjoy this time without a baby, and just know that within a few days or maybe a week you will have a new little person to cuddle with and love forever.  :)
  • Haa haa, I could have written this same post on my 40-day mark, September 5th.  I was 2 cm and 50-75% effaced for two weeks and seemed to stall from there.  Like yours my baby moved SOOOO much all the way till the end but she still didn't seem to want to come out.  I couldn't do anything to get her to come.  In the end, I had to be induced and even then ended up with a c-section but she was also larger than we thought she was going to be.  We only waited 4 days after her due date before inducing but from the looks of it she was probably going to have to be c-sectioned out anyway.  Hang in there!!
