3rd Trimester

Britax Chaperone

I am planning to x-post this to 0-6 mo. too.

Do any of you have the Britax chaperone infant seat? We installed the bases in our cars over the weekend and they hang off about 5-6 in.  I know the rule is 80/20 on the seat and the depth of the base is 25 in.

Did any of you have this problem? I called Britax and they said it was fine.  The base is secure but I'm wondering if that potential 1 in. could be problematic?

Thoughtss?

This is the review I left on Amazon for those of you searching for this.  We finally made a decision:

I no longer have this carseat but felt that I should leave a review for those unwitting first time parents out (I am also a first time parent) there. I registered for this seat knowing that the Britax name is a good one in the field of carseats. I received the seat and a base in early July as presents. They, of course, sat in the closet until 2 weeks before my due date when we decided that it might be a good idea to install. The first thing we noticed after installing was just how much the base hung off the seat. When we had the carseat inspector take a look - she said it was fine because it met the 80/20 test. The same thing occurred in our second vehicle - the base hung off the seat about 5 inches (the base itself is 24.9 inches). We called Britax just to be sure that this was ok and they gave us the same information regarding the 80/20 test.

We planned to keep the seat until I thought about the logistical issues a bit more. Our vehicles are both pretty spacious. Given that it hung off that much in our cars, we wondered what it must be doing for others with smaller, more compact vehicles. Also, both of our cars are 2000s. We had a few family members, friends measure the back seats of their more recently purchased cars and found that the depths were typically smaller even in full size sedans (around 18"). Ultimately, we concluded that it would be difficult to fit this base in a new car we purchase, a car owned by our nanny or our parents' vehicles. Additionally, since the base juts out from the seat 5 in. it severely diminishes the amount the passenger's or driver's seat can be reclined or moved back (my husband is 6'2"). Practically speaking, for a carseat that costs $200+ and a base at $90+, it didn't make sense to keep it knowing that it may not work in most vehicles.

We ended up returning and going with the Chicco Key Fit 30 which gets equally good reviews. I wish we could have kept this seat because we did really like it and know that Britax is a great manufacturer. But, the size issue just put us over the edge.
