It's basically a free program that allows you to save towards your LO's college fund. You can sign up at upromise.com and register all your grocery and store cards (like CVS, Kroger etc). When you log in, it will show you which stores in your area are eligible. Then, every time you spend and the cashier swipes your card, the store put a small % of your purchase into your UPromise account. You can then claim the money in the future for college expenses etc. It's not going to be our only means of saving for college, but I figure every little bit helps.
Re: Publix --- if you're interested, you can ask the cashier to give you a Publix/UPromise card. It's one of those that you put on your key chain and swipe everytime you shop. Then you would register the card online with UPromise. Also, you can get more into it by getting more rewards by shopping online through their site etc but I haven't done all of that. I have only linked by grocery and pharmacy cards to it.
You can contact them to have them explain it all to you to see if it's something you would want to pursue - there's a toll free number on their website. Also not sure if there are any taxes on the money / tax implications etc but you could ask that as well.
You can also post a question about it to see what other people think -- especially on the Nest's Money Matters board (DH and I just signed up with UPromise --- so we may not be the best people to ask. LOL).
Hope this helps!! If not, I'll be watching this post - so I'll check back later if you have more questions.
