If the food looks ....um.... questionable I won't touch it. If DH's grandmother had any hand in making preparing storing or serving it, I won't touch it. Ditto his mother.
In Miles's school they require that everything be "store" bought and prepaired in store. No home made goods.
Even for a potluck? Ew. I think the best part about potlucks is seeing what everyone else has made. A potluck entirely full of store-bought foods just wouldn't be the same...
My Miles' school is just the opposite: whenever they have class parties they specifically state that they prefer you to bring in homemade cookies and treats, not store-bought.

I agree but unfortunately because of the huge regulations in this district Miles will just have to settle for a family potluck!
I guess I never thought to put that much thought into potlucks! I mean, I guess if something was obviously questionable then I would not eat it...but otherwise I'm fine with it. I too grew up where potlucks were a way of life (in fact, they joked about renaming our church "Our Lady of Perpetual Potlucks"-we had them practically every week!)

It's not necessarily about being sterile. DS and DD's daycare requires everything is store bought so they can see the ingredients. There are children with different allergies so it's important to take that into account. DS is highly allergic to peanuts and although his school is peanut free he went into anaphylactic shock when a parent brought in something storebought that wasn't peanut free. His teachers didn't think to check closely enough. His school doesn't have potlucks just class parties for holidays.

I eat what looks good, home or store bought, but not things that look questionable to me. As a mom of a child that has food allergies, I wouldn't expect things at a potluck to be store bought for his sake. I usually bring him his own meal. their school is very diverse, so I love to try what some of the families bring!
Re: Poll: Potlucks
I voted yes BUT

I grew up in the 70s/80s. Prime potluck era. LOL
