Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Induction, tell me the good and the bad

I had my 37/38 week appt yesterday and my doctor would like to induce me next week if I have not had my baby. I am on heprin for a blood clotting disorder and the baby is measuring big and a week ahead (I know growth ultrasounds can be wrong 50% of the time). I'm torn as to what to do so I would love to her your induction stories that went well and those that maybe didn't turned out as planned (very hard labor or c-section). Of course I will be doing research on my own but I like to hear first hand stories as well. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Induction, tell me the good and the bad

  • I had a great induction. Went in at 5:00 a.m and immediately they started pitocin and broke my water. I labored for 12 hours and pushed for 1.5 hours. I had an epidural so didnt feel pain. Nothing went wrong with my induction. The only thing that I didnt like was that I didnt get the feeling of going into labor naturally which I really wanted. Nothing bad about inductions but then again everyone is different

  • I was 40 weeks and went in Thursday at 4pm because my cervix was still thick and had 3 doses are cervadil over 12 hours. That just made me crampy and kept me from sleeping all night. Pitocin at 6am and nothing changed. Dr. broke my water at 8am. Soon after my water breaking, the contractions got really bad. Pitocin contractions are no joke. An epi is a wonderful thing. By 7pm, I was dialated to maybe 2cm and her head was still at -3 and I had been having strong contractions all day. Dr wanted to do the c-section due to lack of progress and heart rate dropping intermittently and I was tired, so I agreed. Sure, I wish I had stuck it out longer (the oxygen was helping DDs heartrate so she wasn't in immediate danger), but the end result would have been the same. My pelvis was too narrow and DD was unable to even drop into the pelvis, so I wasn't progressing. I was the exception at my hospital. Most of the ladies who came in that morning were having babies by the afternoon. My family kept telling me how the waiting room kept turning over and there I sat. Anyways, sure, it didn't go how I wanted, but DD is here and healthy and thats really all that matters. Good luck!

  • I was induced because I was past my DD by 4 days.  It went really well actually and my water broke on its own.

I was given Cervadil twice and was able to walk the halls and eat!  Yep!  I admitted myself at 12a on the 24th (I was supposed to be admitted and induced at 6p on the 25th).  At 3:30a on the 26th my water broke when I was alseep, which I was on bedrest after that.  I was given pit and an Epi.

Induction and a Vaginal Birth...honestly if I was given the chance to have that again, I would.

Now I have to have a planned C-Section for all future pregnancies though due to a tear I had...no biggie to me.  Seeing my son now makes those 9-months, L&D, and late night feedings so worth it!

  • I was induced at 34w2d for pre-e.  Even though none of the labor went according to my preferences, the end result was perfect (healthy baby, vaginal delivery, no epi).  Here are a few thoughts...

    Good:

    • no guesswork on whether or not you're in labor!
    • in my case, it was necessary for my health and baby's - sounds like also the case for you?

    Bad:

    • have to be on the monitors all the time (not sure if this is all inductions or just mine) / no walking around
    • Pitocin can make contractions worse - not the case for me, but that's what I hear
    • bad headache - not sure if this was due to my high BP or the fact that I was on Magnesium

    HTH!

  • I was induced with my second because I was overdue.  I went in at 2 cm and 50% effaced.  They started the pitocin around 8am, my OB broke my water around 8:30, a little before 1pm I was 5 cm, and I had my son at 2:50pm.  My labor was a total of 7 hours from start of pit to delivery and wasn't too bad.  The pitocin contractions were hard, and I did have an epi around 10 or 11am (it is kind of a blur) when I hit 4 cm.  The end went very quickly, as I went from 5 to 10 cm in about an hour.  I had a vaginal delivery, which my OB barely made it to.  I pushed a total of 4 times.  I had a 2nd degree perineum tear and a 1st degree periurethral tear, because DS descended so quickly.  However, those healed relatively quickly, and I had a great recovery only needing motrin as a painkiller.  Overall the experience was great and I have no regrets with the decision to induce.  Good luck.

  • I wasn't induced, but I will tell you that pitocin makes the contractions hurt a LOT worse. If you are planning to get drugs that might not matter. However, I did have an epidural and it ended up not working, so I felt the pitocin contractions. I've heard a lot of stories about botched epidurals, so that's a possibility for everyone.

That said, if there is a medical reason for our induction (which it sounds like there is), you should probably go ahead and do it, IMO.

  • I didnt mind being induced except for the fact that i was strapped to the bed. I couldnt walk any where except for to the bathroom and even then it was with big bertha.. thats what we named my IV thing..

I wanted a natural birth but when you are being induced AND having to have Magnesium Sulfate to prevent seisures/strokes they work against each other ....

Towards the end when I was pushing the pitocin actual made my contractions further apart... which sucked a** ...  I had a vaginal delivery but was pretty close to a C/S

    Good luck to you

  • I had a really good experience.I was induced at 41 weeks due to low amniotic fluid. I went in on thursday and the started cervadil at 3:30pm for 12 hours. I got the pitocin at 6:30 am on friday and my baby was born at 9:29 am ... I pushed for about 30-45 minutes.
  • I've been induced twice with no problems.

With my first, my water broke at 36 wks, so I came in, they started pitocin about midnight and gave me Demerol. I slept till 11am the next morning pretty comfortably, got an epi at about 6cm, went to 10cm in about 15 minutes, pushed for about 20 minutes and DS was born.

With my 2nd I had gallbladder problems so didn't know I was having contractions until I was in the ER on Nubain. At that point they decided to induce and started me on Pitocin about 8pm at night. By midnight they said my water would need broke so I got the epi. As soon as I got the epi my blood pressure dropped though so they turned off the pitocin. I went to sleep, woke up about 7am to find that I was 10cm. I felt the urge to push but the doctors were between shifts. In two pushes and less then 2 minutes, the nurse delivered my baby girl.

  • Only thing I didn't like was that I had to be strapped to the bed. Fetal monitor, contraction monitor, iv, blood pressure cuff, catheter...

I was induced at 39 weeks due to low platelets. I went in at 1.5 cms and 80% effaced. Started pitocin at 9 am, doc broke my water at 10 am, got the epi at 11:30 am when I got to 4 cms. I started pushing around 4:20 and dd was born at 4:59. I did have to have an episiotomy, but other than that, everything went very smoothly (and very fast, to me!).

  • I had a great induced L&D. Here's a link to my story: link.
  • Induction went well.  Contrax weten't too bad, although I did get an epi after a while.  Started pushing after about 10 hours, however LOs head never came down, so I had to get a c section.

  • I was induced at 41 weeks, at this time I was 2 cm & 75% effaced. ON Wednesday at 9:30 pm, cytotec was inserted. At 11:40 my water broke on it's own. The plan was for pitocin to be started at 6am but since my water broke I never had pitocin. By 4am I was dilated to 4cm, and given my epidural. I slept for 2 1/2 hours, woke up at 6:30 dilated to 9cm and started pushing. The nurses said I had a perfect epidural, I couldn't feel anything but I still had control over my feet, legs, etc.

BUT I was falling asleep between pushes and couldn't tell how hard I was pushing, so what did they do? They decided to turn the epidural down, but the anesthesiologist was in a c-section. The anesthesiologist then told nurses to just turn the epidural off and she would come turn it back on at a lower dose when she was finished.

She didn't make it out of the c-section in time. I ended up pushing for 2 1/2 hours with no pain medicine. DD was stuck under my pelvic bone. And after delivery I passed out in the shower because I lost so much blood. I couldn't get out of bed for the first two days because I was so weak. DH had to take care of DD because I could barely even reach for her.

Now, I don't know if the induction had anything to do with the hard labor, since my body did take over after the induction began. But that's my story.

  • I was 4cm and 90% when I was induced. They started the pit and broke my water. They wouldn't give me an epidural until I was making progress (still think that's stupid- they broke my water, it's not like they would send me home!). The hour between when the OB broke my water and when I got the epi was agony. My BP was high when I was admitted (145/105), but it got scary high before I got the epidural. 210/150? I know I was really, really close to being on mag. They insisted I stay on my left side, and that was soooo bad.

My epi was crap, but even a crap epi made everything so much better! They offered to redo it, but I didn't want to be totally numb so I just dealt with it.

I progressed quickly- 4cm at 8, 6cm at 9, 8cm at 10, and fully dilated/effaced by noon. But Emmy didn't arrive until 6pm. 2 hours of that was just laboring down, 4 was pushing. But, I had a 9lb 7 oz baby....

  • Was induced at 39 weeks 4 days, due to bad swelling and high blood pressure, plus I was dilated to 3 so doc said "lets go for it". I was given the pitocin at 8AM, labored until about 1-2pm when they FINALLY broke my water (why they waited so long IDK?), after that I labored HARD, I walked the halls a TON, had a sandwich, sat/rocked on the birthing ball, took a little nap, got the epi at 8PM (I still can't believe I waited that long!) at which time I was only 5 CM. At 9 I was still 5CM, they upped the pitocin for the millionth time, and at 10PM my doctor made the decision to do a Csection. I was not a happy camper, but in the end, it doesn't really matter. As long as the baby and I were okay, that's all I cared about.

Alex never entered the birth canal, he was so far up in my belly, they had to push him down to get him out. I am able to deliver vaginally for the next birth, so I'm happy about that.

    Good luck!

  • Unfortunately my induction was not a good experience.  My water broke @ 37w6d @ 3 am while I was running around the back yard trying to get my house dog to stop eatting grass :(

Got to the hosp by 4am.  Started antibiotics and pit by 7am.  I was 2cm 50% effaced upon arrival and had been that way for 2 weeks.  By noon, no progress but the amount of pit had been steadly increased.  I got my epi at that time due to the contractions on pit being brutal. For the next 8 hours the nurses called the dr every 2 hours to get permission to up the pit due lack of progess.  I ended up on very high amount of pit which never resulted in progress.  My contractions ranged from 2-15 min for the first 17 hours of labor and I only dialted to 3cm and 75% effaced.

My baby never dropped in birth canal. Dr had me start pushing around 7pm (17 hours in to labor) to try to get baby to drop and at this time I dialated to an 8.  After 3 hours of pushing, I started cramping in my sholders and upper back and I started to panic and cry hysterically.  My epi was wearing off to help me push correctly and with the high level of pit the contractions were unbearable. Every time I pushed the crown of Babies head would enter birth canal, but as soon as I would stop pushing... his head would just pop right out.  Dr tried to get me to push but I was worn out from 20 hours of labor so I ended up with emergency c/s.

I am glad I was given the opportunity to try to deliver vaginally, I only wish that my dr had decided even after 10 hours of no progress to just do c/s.  I can been too mad at him though because even though he was not on call that day he stayed at the hospital till 11pm to deliver my baby instead of pawning me off on the on call doc in his group.

  • My induction had its good points and bad points. First off, they had a horrible time trying to get the IV to take and there was blood everywhere. So that sucked. Then my epi only froze my legs, which was ridiculous, because I could feel EVERYTHING but I couldn't change positions to make it better without having help to roll over. Next time I will NOT be getting the epidural. On the plus side, my labour was 3 hours and 45 minutes. I pushed for 45 minutes.

The worst part, though, was that I could hear DS's heart rate go down on the monitor during some of the pushes and it scared the bejeesus out of me. I had to have oxygen because he wasn't getting enough. It was terrible because I needed to get him out so I needed to push, but his every time I heard his heart stop beating I stopped pushing because it was distressing him. He wound up getting vacuumed, and I was really worried about that, but he had no latching issues or anything afterwards and barely any swelling.
