How to find daycare?

I am not even showing, but thought it would be a good idea to contact the daycare next door to my business.  They said they had no openings until next AUGUST!?!?!  I am totally new at this.  How in the world do you find daycare?

  • There was a post earlier with some good advice:  https://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/22376063.aspx

  • Maybe I should be more specific:  Does anyone have any specific recommendations for Arlington or Alexandria?  Ever place I've called won't even put me on a waiting list and barely gives me the time of day.  I would never have anticipated that it would be such an unwelcoming process.  I'm really at a loss here.

They won't even put you on a waiting list?  That's surprising.  We're on several waiting lists in Arlington.  I sent DH to do onsite visits and they all gave him forms to fill out at that time to get on the waiting lists.  They all seemed to quote 12 months to get a space, though I wonder how much it's like going to a restaurant that says it'll be an hour to get a table and it takes less time - you might get in somewhere sooner than they anticipate if families move away or their circumstances change and they take their baby out of the center.

  • So they won't even put you on the waitlist?  Have you tried Bright Horizons in Crystal City or Carlin Springs Road?  We were on the waitlist at both for a year but came up soon after a year.  Do you specifically want a center over in-home?  In-homes don't have a waitlist - they just open up with expected availability.  It is a very frustrating process.  I wanted to cry.
  • Will you consider in-home daycare?  Generally it's easier to find on short notice - no waitlists or deposits.  Some people do in-home while they're on waitlists for centers.  I had DD #1 in an in-home situation (she's now in preschool) and DD #2 is in the same in-home.  Because of weird circumstances I couldn't look for daycare for #1 until after she was born, so centers were not an option for me because of the waitlists.

  • Start here.  You can view inspections and violations for in licensed in home and daycare centers.  Good luck!
