Maternity leave

I am just full of questions today so hopefully you ladies can help...

How did your organization handle coverage of your work while you were on maternity leave? What preparation helped before you went out (writing up a plan with your supervisor, etc?) Did your team specify who would cover what areas of your work, or did you have to wrangle folks to cover for you?

I'm trying to make contingency plans at this point and I'm curious to see what experiences others had!

Re: Maternity leave

  • I came up with a plan for who would cover what, but because I don't have the authority over my coworkers to request that they cover certain things, I presented the plan to my supervisor.  She liked all my ideas and then she was the one who communicated the coverage plan to my coworkers.

  • I work for a small company so mine might be easier but I made a plan of what everyone's areas of work were to be while I was out, also getting closer to my due date I made a list up everynight about what I had done that day and what still needed to be done so if I did go out that day they knew where I was and what to pick up and run with the next day. I worked with the owner to figure out who was going to do what and who would be doing more than others on my work.
  • I made a week by week plan of everything that needed to get done and SOPs for all activities over the 12 weeks I would be out and gave it to my supervisor and the employee I supervise.  Between the two of them they covered all of my leave.
  • I made a table in a Word document listing all of my responsibilities, the frequency in which I have to do them, and additional details about them including where the files are located. I also had a column for "Assigned To". I met with my manager to review the document and provided my thoughts on who would be best to take over certain pieces of the work. I then had her assign them to people in the group. I then met with each person to transition the work and I also provided documentation on each task. It actually went very smoothly once I got everything organized.
