Daycare Licensing

Ok now I'm confused.  Must daycares be licensed by both Fairfax County and the State of Virginia, or is it one or the other?

I found a local page for daycares in my area which states that "Our list only includes names of providers that have a Fairfax County permit or a Virginia State License."  However, when I go on the DSS site, I cannot find half of the providers listed.

Help!

TIA :-)

Re: Daycare Licensing

  • I'm happy to answer this because I looked into this in depth when I was looking at daycares.

An in-home provider or center can have either one or both.  It is possible to find someone/someplace one the state list but not on the county list, and vice versa.

My lady has the Fairfax County license, but not a state license.  This is why when people are looking, especially for in-home, I try to communicate to them that looking on the state site is not the whole story.

  • Thanks so much!  Is there a Fairfax County site that is comparable to the DSS site where you can see violations?

  • When I was searching, no, the Fx Cty site just listed people.  I had to call Office For Children to inquire about violations.  Their site is just not as sophisticated as the state's.  Here's the site I used - maybe it's improved over the past two years?
