help ~ My baby won't take a pacifier

I am breastfeeding my 5 week old baby.  Once she starts crying she won't stop until I give her my boob.  She is not hungry, but cannot soothe herself in any other way. My pediatrician recommends a pacifier but she refuses to take it and even gets more frustrated if we hold it in her mouth.  How can I get her to use a pacifier to help calm her need of suckling.  We have tried avent, soothies & NUK.

Re: help ~ My baby won't take a pacifier

  • My DD is now 9 months old and has never wanted a pacifier either and we survived just fine. :)  It's okay, your baby will be alright.
  • A was never interested in the paci so we didn't force it. Honestly it's better in the long run...when eventually you'll have to fight to get rid of it.

  • try to read Harvey Karp's "The Happiest Baby on the Block" - he talks about how to make a baby take a pacifier (you basically have to pretend you're going to take it away).
