Pull-ups diapers for 11 month old?

Changing my son's diaper has gotten exponentially harder since he started to crawl.  To make it easier on both of us, I'm wondering if it's worth trying pull-ups to at least make getting a new diaper on him easier.  However, I don't know if they'll leak more with a crawler, etc.

Thoughts?  Advice?

  • Pull-ups are great for pee.  Not so great for poop.  I don't think they have the coverage.  I used to use my leg to pin her down while changing her diaper, but had so many bare butt shots as she crawled away.  Luckily, it is a stage like all others and settles down after awhile.

  • I don't know about absorbency, but it seems like it would be a pain in the rear and would make the diaper-changing process that much longer if you would have to fully undress his bottom half for every single diaper change.

DS is a squirmer, and to make things easier, I unfold the diaper and pull out the wipes before I even get started with him.  I've made up a routine, and he's become much more cooperative.  First, I sing him a little diaper-changing song that I made up and put him down on the floor.  When he starts to squirm, I say "give me two minutes", holding up two fingers.  He's learned over time that the phrase means to stay still while I change the diaper and I'll be done soon.

If you're desparate, you can also put on regular diapers while they stand -- though it takes a little practice to get the technique down.

  • Seems like Pull-Ups would be harder.

Can you try giving him something to play with while you change him?

Or, give him a bottle while you change him?

  • If he's not standing/walking yet, I would expect pullups to be harder.

Even now, I just wrestle DS during diaper changes.  I often hold him down with one arm or leg and use the other arm to change him.  Standing diaper changes work well on occasion--for wet diapers only though.

  • I wouldn't do it, Pull-Ups are not nearly as absorbent as regular diapers so you'd go through a lot more of them which would definitely make your problem worse!

  • DS is in Pull-Ups and it is a pain in the butt to take have to completely take off his pants and shoes if he's get them. But it is easier to actually pull them up rather than hold him down and try to strap the diaper on. We don't have too many problems with leaks, although we still have one from time to time.

    This.

  • Ok, I'm glad I asked this first before wasting money trying it.  :)

I do give him a toy or something else to play with, but he quickly gets bored with it, so I'm running out of safe things to give him.  If I try to restrain him at all, it backfires and he freaks out crying hysterically, plus he's pretty strong so I don't want to hurt him or for him to hurt himself.

Now I know why mommy bootcamp exists ;)

  • Pull ups + poo = yuck. Good luck!

There was a phase where I had to hold Maggie down to change her poopy diapers and she would throw a fit - it did eventually pass but it sucked while we were in it since it's not like changing the diaper is optional.  You can get half decent at changing pee diapers while they stand or sit on your lap after some practice if that makes them more amenable to the process.
