Success after IF

Sick Toodle :(

DH was sick last week and I feel awful for not being more diligent about keeping him away from Toodle, and now Toodle is sick. I feel so bad for him, he's actually pretty happy and normal when awake other than occasional outbursts of crying, but last night was rough.

Every time I laid him down he'd cry and cough and snort and the crib wedge doesn't work because he turns himself 90 degrees in his sleep (and then if the wedge is there, rolls to the bottom of the PnP and wedges his face against the side). I ended up having him sleep in his swing because after sitting up holding him for 2 hours I realized I was getting sick too and needed to get some sleep. I was SO paranoid letting him sleep in the swing all night, terrified he'd suffocate or something.

And he is NOT a fan of Mr. Thirsty (our knickname for the nasal bulb).

Fingers crossed tonight sees some improvement. We have a pedi appt tomorrow anyways because I thought his reflux was worse but now I wonder if it was just the onset of this cold.

  • a couple tips, if you didn't already know..

hold one nostril shut while you suck the other

saline spray ROCKS to keep a stuffy kid loose. Just get the generic big cheap bottle, it's the same stuff as the $9 kids stuff, and give one shot up each nose, suck, then spray again. repeat in 3-4 hours to keep loose.

We also started early with a silly "1, 2, 3! faces and game when we did it, and she hardly cared once she knew she was about to have the best.time.ever , lol.

  • Thanks, Davez! Last night I tried to make my own saline but it didn't work so well, but DH is going to get some from Walgreens today - and I appreciate the bulb tips. I don't think I've ever heard him cry as hard as when I stuck that thing in his nose. Sad This morning he woke up all smiley at daddy but kept looking at me suspiciously, haha.

  • That first cold is the WORST!! Nolan managed to avoid getting sick until about 9 months when he got RSV..... We were not a happy household!

Take care of him, and keep him comfortable!

  • I'm sorry.  Poor Toodle!

I agree with pp -- the saline drops help so much.  Do you have the battery-powered nasal aspirator?  Ava actually LIKES it!  It works incredibly well and is so much faster than the bulb (which she fought every time).

I hope he (and you, and DH) feels better soon!

  • Aw, feel better soon Toodle. Poor guy!
  • Poor baby...I hope he feels better ASAP.

  • Battery operated nasal aspirator - greatest thing ever (but only use the shorter, rounder tip - not the pointy scary one.)

And yes!!  Infant saline drops!  He will hate when you put them in his nose - but then he'll be MUCH happier!!

    Wheee!

  • oooh, and if you don't have it, get the red cross bulb at target - it's the white  chubby one that has a short angle tip - I like it b/c you can't shove it up too far and hurt them. that is REALLY nice in my opinion.

you can also blow in his face right before you slurp, and he'll be so ticked off at the whiff he'll hardly notice the suck ;-)

  • poor little guy.   :(

sleeping in the swing was probably a good idea actually. was his head elevated a bit?

every time someone in our home gets sick we all end up catching the bug. illness is indeed a family affair.

This exactly and run a cool mist humidifier at night.  Reese has already had 3 colds and she now laughs when we use the bulb syringe.
