Dumb question

This may be a totally stupid question, but can you breastfeed if your baby is in the NICU?? My OB told me I am probably going to go pre-term and I really really really want to BF.  I mean, I'll pump if I have to so they get the nutrients, but I want to attach to my LO and do it "right."

Re: Dumb question

  • yes - you may have to pump at first but an LC (lactation consultant) can work with you to bf.
  • It can be done but it can be difficult, especially depending on how early you end up delivering - and most likely will require some pumping/bottles at first!

  • definitely!!! and don't let them pressure you into bottle feeding too soon! at my nicu they really pushed for bottle feeding. but i waited about 3 weeks after she had a good latch to make sure the breastfeeding was established. (most LCs recommend 6 weeks- but i wanted to take her home, so i cut it short.)

at my nicu they start non-nutritive sucking at 32-34 weeks... my daughter was about 33w when she latched and nursed away.
