Baby Names

DS is Jefferson and DD is Kate

Someone at the store commented today that they have never in their life heard of the name Jefferson for a name, other than a last name.  I am the 4th generation in my family to use the name.  Then they commented how come we used Kate, "a normal name" when DS has such a unique name.

I wasn't offended, as they weren't being snarky about it at all.  But I totally never thought of Jefferson as an off the radar type of name.  We usually get tons of comments on his name, but now I am wondering if others think it's weird and are just too nice to say;)

  • I've never heard it as a first name IRL, but last names as first names are very "in" right now. They are NMS, but I'm in the minority.

Ditto. I never would have thought someone would use Jefferson as a first name. But these days, nothing really surprises me. And while last names as first names are nms, they are 10 million times better than completely made up names IMO.

  • I like them both!! :)

  • I've never met a Jefferson IRL, but I would not think it was strange or weird at all if I heard it/met someone named that. Lots of last names are used as first names, and this one is particularly nice, IMO.

  • I knew a Jefferson growing up... I'm 30 so it's not new to me.

Do you mean this as snarky as you sound? Seriously, get over yourself.

In certain regions, using last names as first names--if they are ACTUAL FAMILY NAMES-is not trendy at all and is just as classic as a name like Kate or William.

To the OP, I know a Jefferson in his 30s, and he's actually British South African. In my family there are lots of people with the FN Harrison dating back over 200 years, although it was originally a last name, so I'd hardly call it trendy.

  • The name Jefferson is hardly new.  I put forth as an example Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy during the Civil War.  Now, don't let that association spoil the name for you!  I think it's a great name -- and most people don't even know Davis' first name, after all, so they won't draw that connection.  My point is just that it's not a completely new or madeup name....  :)
  • I always think of '80s references! lol I remember a character on Married...with Children named Jefferson, so while I don't know any IRL, it's a name I heard of like 20 years so ago so it wouldn't surprise me at all to meet one.

  • I knew a Jefferson in H.S. It technically is not in the same "category" as Kate, but I  still think they go together very well!

Boy, do I feel like a MORON! I just reread what she wrote and I totally missed that Jefferson was a family name. I apologize and completely understand wanting to use a family surname as a first name. I wasn't paying attention and just assumed she was using a random surname. That's the trend I was referring to. I am sorry!

Sorry if I was harsh. Very hormonal after 10-hour car ride yesterday.
