Thanks for your feedback on simply thick! I'm hoping it will change our lives, too. Up to this point I dread feeding DS, and he's miserable, and we're all miserable. And I feel like it's getting in the way of our happy family bonding time.
anyway, Question - Andrew was using Dr. Brown's level 2 nipple with straight milk. He had a swallow study and they recommended him to use Simply THick (nectar) with a level 3 nipple after watching him eat with that for about 1/2 an ounce.
Now at home, the flow is way too slow. He's getting frustrated and it's taking him an hour to eat not quite what he'd normally eat and he's getting super tired before he's full.
Did you use the dr. Brown's Y-cut for thickened food? DH said he couldn't find them at Target but I'm going to check again today.
Any other tips?
Thanks!
Re: tierelieber
Another thing that changed my life: Playtex drop-ins. Love them.
Charden has been using Playtex Drop-ins since she was probably about 4months old actual. She uses the rapid flow. She also had a swallow fuction study done revealing a problem coordinating her swallowing- is this what Andrew has problems with? It's really not uncommon, and is often mistaken for reflux.
So I would definitely suggest drop-ins with rapid flow. She's almost 10 months actual 7.5 months adjusted now, and it's still working for her. I hope it works for you too! I have never tried Dr. Browns. I have tried a y-cut with the drop ins, and it also just frustrated her because it was too slow. Good luck! Let me know how it goes! Isn't it amazing how much of a science this eating thing is???
INteresting!
Andrew has severe reflux & now this! He's never had a coordination problem before (he had a SS in the NICU), but I think it's started as he's teething and can't handle the reflux and is getting tired.
Anyway, his swallow is a little delayed when he gets tired, and so he's not aspiration but hes' having the deep penetration and choking after he eats about 3-4 oz and gets tired. Frustrating since he never had any problem and I never thought he'd regress!
Thanks!
Aww, poor little guy! He is such a cutie! Charden would eat 2 or so ounces and then start screaming for no reason. I thought it was reflux and I scheduled an appt with a GI specialist. That doctor knew instantly that it was a swallowing problem. She still has a bit of reflux every once and a while, but she's a happy spitter, so it's not too bad. Are you going to try the drop-ins?
I'm debating - I've heard good things, but we have so much $ in Dr Brown's. .. hmmm
Our GI specialist, therapist, etc. - nobody suspected or thought about a swallowing problem!
