How do you tell the difference between leaking amniotic fluid and normal discharge?

I don't believe that I am leaking fluid, there's just a lot going on down there and I want to make sure I'm correctly classifying it!  I couldn't find the answer in my pregnancy books, although I admittedly have not bought Dr. Luke's book yet.  (That's on the schedule for this weekend!)  Thanks ladies!

  • AF will keep leaking.  If you're having contrax, it'll leak more during contrax.  Mine (I assume all) was pretty watery, but had a VERY light mucusy texture (as in I could feel the pad I was wearing slip when I rubbed the absorbant side together).  It's always better to be checked out if you're not sure.
  • I just got back from the dr. (reg because ob wasn't in) and she said I have an UTI.  I noticed I was leaking a little something also and like you said things are so insane from the belly button down that I didn't know if it was urine or something else.  I always have urgency so that was no different.  So if you notice a little leaking it could be uti.

  • i knew my water had broken vs. leaking urine because with the amniotic fluid, it would stop coming out when i sat down on the toilet... every time i tried to get up, it would start again. urine just kind of leaks until you get to go empty your bladder! and the "normal" discharge i think is different for everyone... amniotic fluid will be clear or maybe slighty pinkish, and i've heard it smells sweet. i honestly don't think i smelled mine because after a few minutes i knew my water had broken!
  • I had a slow leak. I thought it was watery discharge.  I talked to my doctor about it and he said that it is normal to have increased discharge... so I thought nothing about it.  I wasn't even wearing a pad.  It was not much at all, but it was VERY watery and clear.  It didn't have any smell at all.  If you are leaking watery discharge, I would get it checked.... then again, I came in for spotting and found out I had a leak... so I am paranoid about it.
