Baby Names

Preston??

Hi everyone, I'm new here to The Bump and would love to get some opinions on a name I am considering!

I was just wondering what your first impression of the name Preston is, how many Preston's you know and how old, and what you think about the name overall. I've been reading some of the other posts and haven't seen it mentioned, but I just want to make sure it is not getting too popular. On the 2008 SSA list it was 124 but that was almost a year ago so I wanted to get some feedback from you ladies.

Thank you in advance!!

Re: Preston??

  • I like the name Preston.  It sounds sophisticated without being too stuffy.  I have only known one Preston who went to high school with me.  He went by the nn Pres which worked for him but I always thought that nn was a little weird.
  • I like the name as well.  I don't know any Preston's... the only one I have ever heard of was on Grey's Anatomy!  I can see how it might seem like a fancy adult name, but it is just as nice for a child.

  • i also went to high school with a preston. that's the only person i know by that name though. i think its cute.
  • I dont' like it.  I know a Preston, and I'm not a fan of his. But even aside from that.... it just has a prissy sound to it.

  • I've never met anyone IRL named Preston but like the name for a boy only.

  • Preston makes me think of 2 people. One is Britney Spears' son Sean Preston. The other is a Preston my DH had in his 2nd grade class last year. This was a tiny, underprivileged boy who was very funny and talked with a lisp. DH always came home with great "Preston stories."

  • I dated a Preston in jr high--he was quite the gentleman! Great smile, too.

I love the name. Sophisticated, but NOT pretentious.

  • I know two dogs named Preston....

  • I love the name Preston! I've only known 2 boys with the name Preston ( 27yrs & 22yrs)
  • I went to HS with a Preston (graduated in late 90s). It is not a name I hear often. I don't particularly like it, but it's not a bad or ugly name by any means. I just happen to find it a bit pretentious is all.
  • I know two Preston's- one is 25, the other is three. I also know a cat named Preston. It's NMS, but it's not particularly bad or ugly.

  • One of my fav kindergarteners when I was teaching was named Preston so I have good associations with it.  I think it's classic sounding w/o being overused.
  • I don't like it.  I think it sounds like wt trying to sound classy.

  • I have known 2. One a friend's husband, is about 35. The other, my brother's friend, is 16. I really like it.

  • I love the name preston but it is the name of an ex so DH would never let me name our baby that. I have only ever met one preston and he is 25 years old now

  • I'm not a fan. It doesn't sound very masculine. I agree with pp that it sounds pretentious. I've never met a Preston.
  • Well there are certainly some mixed reviews but I thought most of them were good! Thank you all very much for your opinions. I still don't understand why some people say the name sounds "pretentious", or "wt trying to sound classy" but I do get that everyone has their opinions.

Any other feedback would be great :)

     Thanks again!!

  • Boys name right? I dated a Preston once. Not too smart, but really cute!

  • Sorry but I hate this name.  It simply sounds uptight and pretentious.  I know a 9 year-old Preston who is a fine child and is not the reason I dislike the name. Honestly a friend and I use "Preston" to refer to any rigid, uptight person.  "He's a Preston." Not terribly mature of us, but I just wanted to be honest with you.

  • I think it's a nice name. It's my sister's fiances name. He's the only one I know with the name and he is about 45.

  • Moesten...I've never in my 40+ years of life ever heard the term "He's a Preston."  Sounds totally made up to me.  Wonder why you would have such a reaction to a name to the point of using the word "hate" in your response.  Odd.

As for the name itself I like it.  There are two Preston's that I know of on the Parenting board.  Both are cute little boys...I think 3-4 years old.  I think it sounds distinguished...not prissy and certainly not WT (don't know where THAT came from).  My DS's name is Winston which I also think is a distinguished sounding name.  He is named after his grand, great, and great-great grandfathers.

  • Thank you hopefulmom!! I also that that was very strange and made up sounding, some people are just different I suppose.

And I agree with it not sounding WT, again, some people are different haha! Winston is such a cute name, it definitely reminds me of Preston style wise, I think they are both in the same category.

Thank you for your response, you made me feel better about some of the things the others had to say :)

I wouldn't expect you to have heard it.  A friend of mine's wife suggested the name and he hated it. He felt the name was uptight sounding.  Since then he and I have used the term "He's a Preston" in a teasing manner when someone is a stick in the mud.  Never in my post did I suggest that "He's a Preston" is some pop culture saying that's sweeping across the nation. She asked for an honest opinion of the name and I gave it to her.  It makes me cringe.
