Have you given LO pedialyte?

DD has a urinary tract infection and started having diarrhea this afternoon.  Since she has been sick all week she hasn't really been eating like normal, so I am concerned she will get dehydrated.  I called the nurse and she mentioned pedialyte, but didn't want to be the one to ok it.  She told me to call the dr in the morning.  Which of course I will do, but I was wondering if there was any harm in giving a little pedialyte tonight?

Re: Have you given LO pedialyte?

  • My LO had diarrhea once and the pedi ok'ed it (when my LO was about a month old). If she has had a lot of diarrhea, I'd give her a little to make sure she doesn't get dehydrated.

  • I have given it to him several times. I'd give it to her if you're concerned. DS was in the hosptial for dehydration a couple of months ago--better safe than sorry!

    Hope she feels better soon!

  • Personally if it were me...if she can't OK it she needs to speak with the pedi and get the OK, or page the pedi to call you.  I didn't need to use pedialyte that young, so I am not quite sure how much you would use.

  • I was given the okay for pedialyte at 6 weeks. I got the flavorless one, but could still barely convince her to drink any.

  • OK, I told DH to pick some up on his way home.  How much should I give?

  • I gave it to DD at 10 days! She was very constipated and hadn't pooped in 2 days...pedi told me to give her 1/2 oz.

  • Last week K was vomiting and because she's so small the nurse at the pedi's office was very concerned about dehydration.  She told me to give Pedialyte in a progression ex: 1/2 tsp first hour, 1 tsp 2nd hour, 2 tsp 3 hour, etc.  A little probably wouldn't hurt but definitely check with the pedi tomorrow.

i had to give DD an ounce before every feeding for about a week to help get rid of the diarrhea and take care of a bit of dehdration. She didn't like it at all and fought with me lots.
