SSN - how long does it take?

I understand they give you the forms in the hospital to get the social security number.  How long did it take you to receive the card in the mail (or is there some other way you get it - do I have to go to a SS office?)?

I think it took less than a month b/c it came before DS was home from the NICU (and I sent it late).

The hospital took care of filing the forms, I got the card around 6 weeks.

I think mine took 3-4 weeks.

Holy Cross sent the paperwork in for me.  I think it took about 4-6 weeks.
