Steroid shot at 23 weeks

My peri has decided to give me the steroids at 23 weeks.  He said that they are typically given at 24, but since I Ppromed at 20... he wanted to make sure to get the steroids in before labor or infection.  He also said there have been studies showing steroids at 23 weeks are just as effective.  I would get them starting this sunday.  I was wondering if anyone else had them at week 23?  Did your LO do ok?  They plan on repeating them at week 27.

We are still hanging in there with no contractions or signs of infection.  Measured the babies and both are a little less than a pound.  Fingers crossed we make it to at least 28 weeks.

Re: Steroid shot at 23 weeks

  • My sil recieved her shot (only got one) at exactly 23 weeks. Her babies were born less than 24 hours later. They both cried at birth but did need ventilators.

    Good luck!

  • I got them at 24 weeks, but that is when I went into preterm labor.  My DS was born at 26 weeks able to breathe on his own.  He was put on a vent for a few days for extras support, but came off quickly.  I know they make a big difference.

  • I got mine at 9 and 10 days before I had LO when my water broke.  She was on a ventilator for 8 hours and CPAP for like 10.  She's been on the nasal cannula since with just pressure, no oxygen.  She's almost 3 lbs already and doing amazing.. I think the shot made all the difference in the world.
  • I got mine at 24w, 4d and my twins were born at 26w, 6d. My son went right to CPAP and my daughter was only on the ventillator for a few hours and then went right to CPAP. I truly believe the steroid shots made a huge difference in my babies lives.

GOOD LUCK and I'm sending prayers and good thoughts your way. I hope you keep those babies cooking for as long as possible.

  • I got my steroid shots in the 23rd week and in the 26th week.  I believe they helped.  I think I posted our story to you before.  Unfortunately those shots still didn't help Nathan enough, but I credit them for giving us 8 days with him that we never should have had.  Again, good luck.  You have my deepest prayers.
  • I had PROM at exactly 23 weeks, and they gave me the steroids immediately.  I made it to 25 weeks, 2 days.  I really think they helped a lot.  my little guy was on the vent for 20 days, but without the need for oxygen much higher than room air.  We've been fortunate with his respiratory health these past 10 months, and I believe the steroid shots have a lot to do with it.

I had been on bedrest, and I was scheduled for the shots at 23 weeks even if my membranes hadn't ruputured.

  • I ppromed at 22.6 had shots at 24 weeks (they made me wait), baby at 24.6.  I read that shots are most effecive if given in a certain time period before birth (hence the second dose).  My doctors did not advise a second round.  Even so, he was on the ventillator for 8 weeks (fingers crossed he is now off for good).

Yes, Our peri has given us a pretty grim outlook for our baby A.  We are still holding out hope, but it isn't looking good.  At this point, the peri's are trying to do what is best for baby B and hope baby A surprises us. It is hard to hear such horrible odds.

Thanks for all the responses ladies.  I was a little nervous of getting it too early.... Hopefully we get them and sail through to week 28.... fingers crossed
