Faster Flow Nipple Adjustment?

How long did it take your preemie to adjust to a faster flow nipple. DD is still using the level 1 Dr. Brown nipple and is taking 2.5 to 3 oz. She is doing really well with not spilling or spitting out much (unless she is sleepy and not hungry) but the problem is that it takes a minimum of 30 minutes if not 45 minutes+ to finish her bottle. I tried the level 2 nipple last week but she was messy again and DH thought it was too soon so we went back to the level 1. My question, is there an adjustment period? Should we keep at it for awhile with the level 2?

I feel like all I do these days is obsess about her eating....

Thanks!

Re: Faster Flow Nipple Adjustment?

  • Our son is 5 months adjusted (8 months) and we STILL obsess over eating, as I'm sure we always will :-) haha!

We had to switch to level 2 at about 1 1/2 months old adjusted.  He was taking 45 minutes to an hour (or falling asleep) when eating 3 ounces.  Sam as your LO.

If the milk doesn't dribble out and she doesn't choke, then she's probably ok!  DS was much happier.   For us there wasn't an adjustment period - he was just ready.  If she isn't quite ready I'd wait and maybe try again after a couple weeks or something like that.

If you want to BF, don't try the level 2.  Once we did the level 2 he flat out refused to BF so now I am stuck pumping.

  • We are struggling with the same thing right now.  I picked up a bunch of level 2s yesterday and tried them out & they made her choke.  I am going to wait a few weeks before trying them again.  However, I would love to transition into breastfeeding a bit more and know that putting on the faster flow is like shooting myself in the foot, but I can't stick with the level 1s forever because my husband is getting annoyed with bottle feeding her for like 45 minutes to get through 2 oz.  I feel your pain!
  • Our guys were not ready for a faster nipple until they were about 4.5-5 months old.  They were still occasionally coughing/choking on their slow flow nipple.  We waited to use the medium flow nipples until they were completely ready.  They are still messy sometimes, but they don't cough or choke anymore.

  • Well i just tried again with the level 2 and DD did pretty good. No choking and she finished her whole bottle with only a little drooling. Of course it still took 45 minutes but we had to stop and change a stinky diaper! What is it about a clean diaper that makes my sweet baby poop?! Smile
  • ha, I'm glad she did well.

DS poops a lot during his bottle...I think because it relaxes him!  He'll start to poop, I take the bottle out of his mouth to let him go, and I think he's done, put the bottle back in, and soon as he starts to suck he'll start to go again. haha.

  • Ha - I am glad Alex isn't the only one. I swear she poops about the same time every day and almost always during her bottle! I was writing out some notes for our babysitter and unfortunately it looks like she'll be the one getting the dirty diapers, he he.
  • I love that ;)
