Warming BM on the go

I'm not very comfortable nursing in public yet and tomorrow I have to be away from home for several hours.  I'm thinking I'll take a couple bottle of BM and maybe try to NIP once.  Also, I would rather give DD bottles because it is faster than actually BFing and our doctor appointments are close together.

So how do you warm BM when you are on the go?

Re: Warming BM on the go

  • When I nursed, I would try to take freshly pumped BM that I pumped right before I left.  If I had to take refrigerated or frozen milk, I'd take a cup to warm the milk, and try to find a place that would have hot water (or even get some from a bathroom sink).  Sometimes I'd even drive through McDonalds or Wendy's, get a drink for myself, and get a cup half-full of hot water (tell them its to warm a bottle).

Most places will probably give you a cup of hot water for free if you tell them its for a bottle.

  • i got him use to cold milk, but you can get a cup of hot water to set the bottle in or run it under hot water.

you'll also want to think about pumping because chances are you'll get engorged. at ds doctor's appt they always let me nurse him privately in the check up room.

  • Ditto pp on the issue of getting engorged. I understand you're not comfortable NIP yet, but you might not feel so great if you go several hours without nursing or pumping while you're out. What is it about NIP that you're uncomfortable about? Is it holding the baby or modesty? Can you bring a nursing pillow to the doctor's office? Most doctor's offices offer a private room to nurse your LO.

  • I always ask if I can nurse DS in the exam room after we're done at his doctor.

I get a hot cup of water if we are at a restaurant to set it in and warm.  But I don't keep it cold in the diaper bag, so it is usually around room temp anyway.
