What age for night training?

My almost 4.5 yo DS has been potty trained since January (he trained late). At what point do you stop the night time pull-up? I don't really pay attention to how often he wakes up dry, but there have been times when he has woken up in the middle of the night to go potty. Do I just stop using them? I think part of it is my own fear and I hate having to do a complete bed change in the middle of the night.

Re: What age for night training?

  • It varies a lot...My DD#1 hasn't wet the bed since the first week we stopped diapers at night--she was 27mo old.  My DD#2 is 33mo old & we've gone 1 wk w/ out night diapers & she's peed the bed twice (same as DD#1 her first week).  I am hoping that's the end of it w/ her too.  I think you need to make your DS go before bed, limit liquids right before bed & then track if he's wet when he wakes up.  I think going in the middle of the night for the first week or 2 is totally normal & fine.  No matter what I would expect you have to change sheets a few times at least--just be prepared.  Unless he has issues w/ his bladder I would think 4.5 is plenty old enough to be able to do it.

  • I'm not going to worry about it until she's at least 5 years.  She's been potty trained since about 2.5 years.

Ugggh . . . I guess it is time. Thanks for the advice.

  • DS is potty trained (3 in November) and one night he just told us he didn't want to put a diaper on. He had already been dry or getting up to pee at night --- so we crossed our fingers and so far, so good. I am sure he'll have a few accidents, but that is why we have a mattress cover!
  • we have a crib size flat mattress protector that is soft that we put on top of the sheet .  we put dd in cotton trainers at first and placed a potty in her room on a towel in case she couldn't make it to the bathroom.  we limit liquids at night.  and have her urinate right before bed. she was dry pretty quickly. she's been out of pullups at night for about 6 months or so.

some kids just cannot go that long though.  my brother took longer .. I think to age 5 or 6 at night.  he'll get there.  if you can find a good sheet protector that, would be helpful for you.

    good luck .
