We are doing the train stuff this year even though DS is not really into trains either.  I just think that he will like it b/c he is getting into pretend.  I bought the Talking Thomas Great Discovery set and a will have a few extra things like a few extra trains and a set of traffic signs and Sir Topham Hat.  I plan on putting together the wooden set and having DS open it that way and he can just play with the trains and act it out.  I am REALLY hoping it is not a waste of about $150 but figured it would have good resale value if he does not like it and DD does not like it by the time she is 2.5.

That's pretty much my thinking, too.  He's getting more into the imaginative play and I hope he'd play with it.  But, like you, I don't want to waste $150.  One boy at our playgroup has one but the kids never seem to play with that.  Maybe I'll let the grandparents get it for him?  haha
