Prevacid?

How is the best way to give prevacid? My pedi told us to quarter each pill and then place the piece in between the tongue and cheek to dissolve, but DS is always able to work it out and gum it up, then swallows it. I have even tried holding it with my pinkie, but that makes DS fussy (obviously, my finger is in his mouth) and it doesn't seem to help any.

I am just worried because the pills say not to crush or chew, but I don't know how to stop DS from doing it?!

Re: Prevacid?

  • I crush it between my fingers and rub it on his tounge. If I don't, he chokes on it. Or gags and then throws up. I've tried dissolving it in water and giving it to him in a syringe, but he spits that back, too. As it is, I wonder how much good it does....

  • I hated the pills.  I halved it and held it on DS's tongue to dissolve.  I kept my finger in his mouth until I could feel that it had dissolved.  You can also dissolve it in a small amount of water and give it in a syringe, but I found that it stuck to the side of the syringe.  When I refilled the Rx, I had them compound it into a liquid, and it has been soooo much better!
  • Prevacid has been working really well for us but boy is it at PAIN to give to DD.This is how the Dr told us to do it:

We half it (with a pill cutter) and then put it into a syringe. Then suck up 4mL of water. It takes about 30 seconds for it to dissolve. Then I swirl it around so that all of the lil pink beads head into the tip of the syringe (otherwise they'll stick to the sides). I keep swirling it around until they're all there and then into her mouth. If they still stick to the insides, I suck up more water and repeat.
It took a few times to get the hang of it but now it's easy.

  • You can ask your pharmacy to compound it into a liquid.  It's much easier!
  • I had it compounded into a liquid. Make sure your pharmacists knows how to make it, keep it refrigerated, and get it flavored. So much easier!
