Pumping questions

So this morning I was engorged on one side so I decided to try pumping for the first time a little to see if that helped. I have a Medela Swing that I borrowed... anyways I seemed to drip more into it before I turned it on than actually pumping milk into it once I started it. I'm now a little nervous about whether I will be able to pump or not (won't really need to till I go back to work). I have 2 questions

1. Could it be the pump? I know the swing isn't the best out there.

2. Would you rent a better pump first before buying a good pump to make sure pumping works for me?

Thanks

Re: Pumping questions

  • you sound fine  you should have drip. drip, drip before a spray. this is what is called the let down. keep up with the pumping

  • When I first started pumping I didn't think it was working for me because I barely got any milk. You have to give it some time because of the let-down feature on the Medela pumps. Also, I pump the most when I pump halfway between my morning feedings. Like today, I fed DS at 6:40, pumped at 8:10 and I'll feed him again around 9:40. I usually get about 2 oz.
