Teeth Brushing

Hi Ladies

I am just dropping by from the 2nd Tri board because I thought you ladies would be the best ones to ask. I was wondering when you started brushing babies teeth. I would assume that you would start as soon as you saw the first tooth emerge but since this is my first I am not sure.

I ask mostly because I am watching my god daughters this weekend and I went looking for the oldest's toothbrush. She is 2 in December and definately has teeth (obviously) and I called to ask if it was packed and I was just missing a pocket or something and was informed that they don't brush her teeth yet?

This seems extremely odd to me but I thought I would ask

TIA!

Re: Teeth Brushing

  • We started brushing DS's teeth with a baby toothbrush (goes on finger) and with the baby Oral B toothpaste (has no fluoride).  We did this when he first tooth appeared.

  • i have brushed DD's tooth since it emerged. lol, yes she only has one. Although, I will say I am not surprised. My dirtball BIL & SIL don't brush their teeth or their 9 and 3 yr olds teeth. I, too, was appalled when they spent the night and I found this out.

  • M has two teeth and I attempt to brush them every day, more to get her used to the sensation and have it be part of her bedtime routine.  Now if she is super fussy and I need to get her down I will skip it.  I'm no expert but I would think once you visited a dentist, usually by age 1, you would want them to be brushing their teeth.

  • It is part of our nightly bathtime routine. DS tolerates it just fine, in fact I think it feels good on his gums. We started doing it when the first tooth cut in. My thoughts are that if he is used to it and thats all he knows, we will never have an issue with teaching him oral hygiene.(I hope it works out that way anyway)
  • Thanks ladies. I know for a fact that they have not visited the dentist with them yet but I thought that they would at least be brushing her teeth.

  • We have been brushing her teeth as soon as they popped out. The pedi recommended not using toothpaste, just toothbrush. Before the toothbrush, we just used a wash cloth.
