starting solids for baby with GERD

Hey girls, question for you.

Without explaining it all, our son has has a lot of feeding/reflux issues lately.  He's had a lot of tests done previously, so now we'll be doing another swallow study and an endoscopy.

Anyways, question - I've read that bananas, apples (acid foods) can make reflux a lot worse.  I was surprised at the bananas.  Bananas and apples are DS's favorites, so, I'm going to stick to avocado and potatoes for a few days and see how he does.  I've read pears are good so we'll start those soon.

I was just curious what your experiences were.

His symptoms have been worse for roughly 1 month.  We started fruits/veggies around that same time (we started oatmeal 2 months ago), although it could be coincidence.

We did wait 1 week in between the introduction of all new foods and new sytmpoms weren't evident at the time.  No rashes, nothing.

THANKS so much.

  • My first son had reflux too, his faves and the ones he tolerated well, were sweet potatoes and squash.

DS hates both :( did you have a problem with apples, bananas, etc.?

  • we were told the kids will usually stop eating stuff that makes them feel worse, so if he's eating them well and you don't notice a worsening, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Robbie has never been a fan of apples or applesauce at all. He's hit or miss with bananas. You know he doesn't eat much at ALL, so sometimes it's hard to tell if he's not eating because he doesn't like something or not eating because he's just not going to eat today.

His "favorites" are usually actually the really disgusting meats that smell like spoiled dog food. (BLECH) and he really likes both the Sweet Peas with Brown Rice and Green Beans with Brown Rice. The doc thinks because those are all less acidic, he prefers them.

The only thing he's ever eaten that seems to really get him was mangoes. And he ate those fairly well (for him, anyway) he just puked them up pretty badly. There was a pretty ugly incident with peach-mango baby food out the nose that I don't care to relive.

  • We had great success with bananas and apples for a very long time, but anything like mangoes or strawberries or even blueberries was a miss.  But we love sweet potatoes.  Avoid anything with tomatoes (obviously) but try watered down cream of corn or macaroni and cheese.
  • So far, he seems to love the foods that are more acidic - like he loves apples.  A lot.  And he just gobbles them down.  But he hates sweet potatoes, which should be easy on the reflux.  But maybe that's a clue that the food isn't' causing the problem.  We're grabbing for straws.
