The twins will be here soon, right in time for flu season. (both regular flu and swine flu)
What are you going to do?
What have your pediatricians recommended?
Where are you going to get your flu shots?
My know the babies won't be candidates until they are at least 6 months.
Re: R u insisting family memb get both flu shots?
If you mean family members as in immediate family...
DH and I will be getting the seasonal flu shot (the babes probably will too). I'm sure DH will have to have the H1N1 because he's military and they seem to be the guinea pigs for a lot of new vaccines. Other than that none of us will be getting the H1N1 shot. I stay at home with the babes, and we don't do daycare so the risk factors for us are lower than the chances of side effects from an untested vaccine (especially since they still haven't said exactly how the vaccine is made and what will be in it). If I feel comfortable with the vaccine after the details are made public, I *might* get it after it's been out long enough to see the side effects.
If you mean family members as in extended family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc)...
I don't see how you can really insist that they get a vaccine. You can mandate hand washing in your home and around the babies, and request that people not come over if they're showing any signs of sickness. Other than that there's nothing you can do. If an extended family member insisted that I get a vaccine that I didn't want, or not come around their babies, I would laugh at them and just not come around their babies.
Our kids were 30 week preemies, and we insisted everybody get the seasonal flu shot before seeing them their first winter - but one of them was a micropreemie, and they spent a long, long time in the hospital and we were on strict house arrest until they were 6 months old.
For their 2nd winter, those family members asked us if they needed to get the flu shot before visiting our babies, and we told them we would appreciate it but we weren't going to mandate they get it.
Now for their 3rd winter, we're not going to advise either way. And we're not giving our kids the H1N1 shot.
DH, DS1 and I will be getting them (I think the pedi said teh babies will, too)... I would never insist family get any vaccine b/c of my babies - that's their body. I am not that stressed about them being around people - if I was, i'd keep them home.
my parents usually get flu shots anyway... i think my sister does... etc.
DH will get his shot at work (he works for pharma co that makes them) and I'll get them at the pedi with the kids.
The vaccine is being tested as we speak, in 7 different locations across the country.
Yeah I know. The results of these tests are some of the things I'm waiting on before making a decision. But "being tested" and "here are the results" are different things. So for now I still consider it an untested vaccine, especially because as far as I've seen they haven't yet said how the vaccine is made, what preservatives are in it, etc. If you have links to that information, and I've just missed it somehow, I'd be grateful.
THIS was/is the same for us, but it's only our second winter and I am still requiring our immediate family members to get shots...luckily enough for us all of our friends have younger kids too, so they get the flu shot as well. As for H1N1, my pedi is advising AGAINST it for now...too many questions.
My peri's nurse recommended at my last checkup that I get the flu shot done (wrote me a dr.'s note to get one). I am debating whether or not to get it as I haven't had them in the past so don't know if I am going to start now.
She said I could get it done by my primary physician or the local Walgreens or CVS (if they offer them there).

I can't insist on ANYONE in my family or DH's getting the shot but all of them sure are courteous enough to not go near my twins if they have the slightest hint of illness. In fact everyone had a cold the week I delivered and stayed away from me to ensure I didn't get sick.
DH, Harmon, and I will get the shot.
I got mine last week and my dh will get his at work in a couple weeks when they start offering them. My twins also got theirs last week (they are almost a year old though).
I think just asking that nobody visit while sick and just be vigilant about handwashing and those measures will help keep your babies safe.
I'm insisting that DH and I and his parents who are constantly around have the shots. I begged my family to also get them. I also maybe implied that the hospital might not let them visit if they weren't vaccinated. This seemed to motivate some cooperation in that department.
I didn't worry quite as much with DD becuase she was a bit older for flu season last year.
