Kiwi or new pajamas that I didn't wash

I've been lax with #2 and not always washing his new clothes before he wears them and he wore new pajamas two nights in a row; could that be the cause for hives?

I bathed him and put him in fresh clothes and he still doesn't seem bothered, but they pretty much cover his little body.

Because he seems okay, I won't do Benadryl, but should I use Calamine lotion or something?

  • If they're all over his body, why don't you call his doctor instead of asking a message board what to do?

  • I know you said you bathed him, but I've heard oatmeal baths do wonders.  I might do that and then hold off until you can get in touch with your pedi.  I seldom wash new clothes before I put them on my kids (bad mommy) or myself and I have never had problems.

  • M has pretty sensitive skin, and he's never had a reaction to unwashed clothes.

Dr. Ps office is open on Sat mornings, so you could give them a quick call and ask the triage nurse.

  • I never pre-wash clothes.  I've never had a problem.  Does he generally have sensitive skin?  If he doesn't then I would guess Kiwi.  If it had to do with the clothes I would imagine that this wouldn't be the first rash due to clothing since he is 13 months old.  I think kids that are sensitive to clothing have it come up often and a lot sooner than 13 months.  Hope it goes away fast.

Doctor's office is closed.  But thanks for your concern.

I called already and it went straight to leave a message or call 911.

  • Look and see if you have some sort of after hours care clinic open in your area to call.  Or nurse line?

But really, if he is not bothered, I would just wait it out.

Nighttime Pediatrics is over near the mall, and I believe the hospital has a nurse line.

But if he's not distressed, I would just ride it out. Maybe some Benadryl (Matthew gets a tsp at 31 pounds)

  • Even though your pedi's office is closed don't they have on call. If not, I would soo be switching practices. Also, if he has hives all over his body he needs intervention...things could get worse. I def would be at least using Benedryl.
  • Winery, you have PM.

  • Hey Winery,

You may not see this since I'm coming in late, but when our dr's office is closed and I don't want to call in a non-emergency, I call our pharmacist. They usually know what to do.

    Hope B is better soon.

  • hope he's feeling better! ?
  • Did he gave his mmr vaccine recently?

  • My kids all have VERY sensitive skin (exema, etc) and new clothing has never been a problem.  Our youngest DD does get hives from watermelon if she eats too much.  I would put my money on food or illness causing hives over clothing.  Hives is generally caused by something going on INSIDE the body.  GL!
  • DD has always had really sensitive skin, and the few times she has worn brand new clothes before they were washed she hasn't had any hives.  I would bet that it is the kiwi that is causing the hives, so I would take DC to an urgent care if your regular Pedi is closed.
  • J periodically gets hives and the pedi's advice is always the same, give her benedryl if she's bothered by them and wait it out.  They've never had us come in for hives.

It is hard to pinpoint the cause of the hives because they can break out hours after exposure.

Brew is right that oatmeal baths can help (oatmeal is one of the causes of J's hives though!).
