Help...problem with carseat?

We just took the covers off of the girls car seats to wash them, and found that the styrofoam underneath them is split in too and worn away in a couple of places.  They are in Evenflo Triumphs, and have been in them for about 2.5 years.  Their seats say they go up to 40 inches and 40 pounds, and they're only 32 pounds and 37.5 inches.  But, I'm a bit afraid to use them if the styrofoam is torn in 2 pieces.  What do you think?  (FYI...Jeremiah's seat is 2 years newer and they have started using a different type of foam that doesn't appear to be worn at all or even be possible to be worn the way that the girls is worn.).

So, would you get new seats?

  • Tough call, especially since they are so close to the weight limit! It sounds worrisome to me to have it split... could you get replacement foam from the company or is it attached to the seat itself in a way you can't move it? If you did get new seats, look into the Graco Nautilus---it will last until they don't need a seat anymore. My cousin has 2, one for her 3 yr old and one for her 5.5 year old. I saw them this weekend and are pretty cool and are not too pricy either. Good luck!

  • From what I understand about the foam in ?car seats, it is energy absorbing in the event of an accident, so I would be very hesitant to use a car seat in which the structure of the foam was damaged for fear it would not do its job properly.

Sorry to hear about that! ?I am glad you discovered it though.?

  • Thanks ladies!  I had the same thoughts you did, so we just went and bought 2 of the Graco Nautilus 3-in-1.  We REALLY like these so far and the girls sat in them and said they are much more comfy.  So, if anyone is looking for a new carseat for a child that can sit forward, this seems like the way to go...these have a 5 point harness until 65 pounds, then a high back booster and then even a backless booster.  SO, we should never have to buy them a new seat!

I agree. I always thought the foam was an integral part of the safety factor in the seats.
